Li-ions are actually pretty safe...

Someone linked to this video over on CPF.

The fact that he was able to cut open a vented cheap 18650 without it catching fire says a lot about these batteries. This personally makes me feel much safer about these things.

And then there is the end where he hooked it up to a 12v battery and then was surprised when it caught on fire quite violently.

Love the disclaimer near the end.

That they were falsely labeled as protected cells is eye opening to say the least.
But wow.

Yeah, I have even found some (from DX) that were labeled as protected and had a board on the bottom to make it look like they were protected. But it turns out it was just a metal contact plate...

Good video. A bit brave/mad not wearing gloves cutting that trustfire open though?

Cos he narrates like Crocodile Dundee taming the circuitry. As in placing your head between gator jaws.

Kids dont do this at home , or anywhere else .. It smells bad cos its TOXIC ! = BAD FOR YOU !

This guy is a tool !

Anyone else wince/cringe when the hack saw came out? Also, I was pretty shocked to see the rolled up crap in there, anyone got a link to a construction diagram?

Yeah, i thought it was going to blow

Here a few pictures/diagrams are on the inside of them.

Kumabear!

I'm not buying anymore SH!TFires.

Same goes for Duracell.

Cheers scaru, the paper looking material in the vid makes more sense now, I was screaming “fake!” At my phone as I watched, Mrs gords thinks I’ve lost it…

USPS better not see this or they may reinstate their previous Lithium ban in shipments.

I don't know, the alkalines are kinda fun... Right now I'm kinda in the mood for a little bit of battery destroying fun. Off to get out an ammo can, a gas mask, and some nice thick wire.

Hes either brave as f*ck or dumb as f*ck.. that large saw.. the pliers. He doesnt trust the cells because they exploded and still he goes at it with rather heavy equipment. lol.

LMAO, that guy opened the cell searching for the “built-in circuitry” I’m sorry, but… what a dumb

Well, a douchebag is a type of tool, after all… J)

Using 18650 for mp3 player? This guy is “extraordinary”.
He should come to BLF to learn what protection circuit is though.

In my boredom I now have a CR123, A 16650 nimh, and a eneloop all in a dead short. So far none have caught on fire. As for whether they are burning hot, I don't know; I'm to scared to poke them. ;)

A li-ion would probably fail this test and at the very least vent.
