MTG-2 Reflectors and optics

OK first post for me and I wanted to share my not great ceiling shots
using the MTG 2 leds in the search for a good fairly narrow beam for use on the mountain bike

I have copied this post from over on MTBR as a slow and lazy typist
so hope it works

OK so copying the post did not work so here is a linky to the thread

MTG2 stuff

Hey troutie, you may need to post the photo’s to photobucket then use the href link to get them up here. please do get them up though as there’s a few of us interested in the mt-g2.

Troutie - read through this thread, it might help!

I have no tree on my puter

Nice, I can’t wait to get one of these in the host I have, and 3a high will give plenty of run time. The 50mm reflector, meant for an sst-90 should work ok too.

You have to post the image url - click on the tree image in the menu bar, between the boat anchor and paint brush icons.

You have to be in the post editor to see the tree. Go to the bottom of the screen and look for 'Post a new comment' or hit the reply button and you should see the screen below. The tree is just below the first smiley face:

Nope I dont have those buttons just the first row

Found the advanced bit so got em now thanks

Ahhh.

Scroll down below comments, select >Input Format, choose radio button for Advanced Post Editor.

Getting used to a new forum is always a PITA, isn't it?

Some ceiling beamshot a bit wonky though sorry

bits of tape are 1 ft apart and ceiling is 8 ft from lights

Ledil Iris optic

Large 80 mm reflector from Cutters

Cant remember this reflector

This one is also from cutters

another spurious reflector

and one of my spidereyes with 2 MTG2`s fitted under Ahortons Aspherics

hey troutie, welcome to the madhouse!

great job on the beamshots, looks like the Iris would make a lovely flood beam and the 80mm cutter monster seems like it would have a relatively tight beam and decent throw. Looking forward to your standard fireroad shots + lumenhound.

Welcome aboard Troutie! Thanks for posting all your reflector combinations with beam shots. It looks like it might be difficult to find a reflector that can properly focus the MTG2. With your test bed, have you experimented by slightly lifting the reflectors to see if shimming might provide a better focus? On the trail, it probably wont matter with the sheer amount of lumens produced.

Any thoughts about a driver for this beast?

Niwalker have a new NWK1000 light scheduled for March that uses a MT-G2 emitter. Beamshots from niwalkerlight.com

Here’s one:

I remember reading somewhere that the reflector work involved with the MT-G2 is more than half the battle - hardly surprising given the size of the thing

I have a host that I and a few others have high hopes of, its intended for a 9a sst-90, I’m just planning on 3.5a, as I want run time as much as sheer brute lumen power.

Woody what would you estimate the beam angle to be from that 1metre wall shot

Flashpilot Thanks
yes I did try a bit of uppy downy with the reflectors to see their best position
hey may have a sweeter spot if I could have gone deeper in to the reflector

the iris looks good and is a fit with no modding
the 80mm one is sweet butbdoes have a large corona which for the bike is good .

I like this picture (from the thread posted by OP)
Gives you some perspective on size compared to the “big” XM-L ;p

I don’t really know - the Niwalker link includes other white wall shots, including the NWK1000UT (Ultimate Thrower) with the XM-L emitter, so that might give you a better idea.

Ta Woody

afraid I am no lover of wall shots much prefer out on the trail shots as gives more realistic impression of the beam IMHO

Small video on a ride tonight

Hope the guy in front didn’t have a mirror on his bike. :stuck_out_tongue:
