Defiant 550 lumen tactical flashlight vs. Defiant 493 lumen flashlight

Has anyone compared the throw of the two Defiant flashlights listed in the subject line. They are both 3 C cell flashlights.

These must have just come in stock because I was there last week and didn't see them. The 550 lumen tactical flashlight at Home Depot has a stock number on the packaging of 115235 and a model number of 809-2781-D. I haven’t seen a model or SKU number for the 493 lumen Defiant. They both use 3 C cell batteries.

The New Defiant LED Torch has a SKU of 639226 and it is also printed on the tailcap. Don’t know of any comparisons.

I posted in the Defiant Super Thrower thread mouse overs between the 550 lumen (Black Friday light) and the new 493 lumen (Super Thrower). I believe it's on the current last page of comments. (Sorry, no link. Sending from my phone and I'm too lazy.)

I have purchased both of these flashlights. The 550 has a nice bright white light that has a good throw and a flood to light up a room. The 493 has the same white light and is even brighter! It is more of a spot light with a more focused beem of light. It will reach out much farther than the 550 with less of a flood. When placing the two lights next to each other you can tell the 493 is brighter with a more focused beam. I hope this helps.

For the extra $5 it is worth the price. The head on the 493 is at least twice the size of the 550. Only if you could mount the head of the flashlight to the a 3 or 4 cell D maglite.

I bought the Defiant 493 yesterday at HD. Can the plastic lens be replaced by a glass lens in the 493? I don’t want to break the new flashlight in the process. I’m sure I’m not as good with mods as most of you folks on BLF. Thanks. What replacement glass lens can be used on the 493? Have you tried eneloops or 18650’s in the 493, with tube inserts?

Thanks ‘griding’ for the post. I really appreciate the comparison. I went out and bought the 493 yesterday at HD. It is definitely brighter and has a better throw than the 550.

See the dedicated "Super Thrower" thread. PM Phil (see last page of that thread) for a lens; he's coming back to the thread with more (he sold out on Ebay). It's a 64mm lens. I haven't tried Li-Ions in mine, but others have and reported in that thread.
