Ring Micro Cyba-Lite

I thought I’d post some pics since I’ve had one of these on my keys for a few years now. I think it cost me around £5 new. I don’t know if they still make them but they are still on the Ring Automotive site. Colour-wise, in addition to transparent red they also came in blue, green, and opaque black. The transparent casing has the advantage of letting a little more light out.

The stock LED is a bright white and useful as a keyring light. It’s not as bright as the 20,000 mcd fauxton’s DX used to sell in packs of 10, so I replaced the LED. I think it makes a good “host”. You only need to trim and bend the LED to shape.

I prefer this light as a keyring light to the fauxtons for several reasons.

  • The button is easy to find and press, responds with a firm click, and most importantly, it stays on! On the fauxtons you have to squeeze the button and then slide the little plastic switch with your nail if you want it to stay lit. I find this far too fiddly! To turn the light off you press the button on the other side.
  • It’s larger and a little bit heavier, but the plastic feels strong. I think the bigger size is an advantage as there is more to hold onto. There is also rubber grips around the sides, and the rubber buttons are sealed to the plastic so there is less chance of liquid getting inside should it get wet.
  • The keyring is also much better quality and easier to attach.

do you ever get accidental turn on w/ that raised clicky?

Nope, I’ve never had it turn on by accident; it requires a really firm press. The white “ring” around the battery acts like a mechanical switch.
