chopped c mag: 26650 XML2 custom 3.5a driver

so i was drinking last night and kind of added stuff randomly in a mess… so sober me is going to come back and put it all somewhat neatly here in the first post

heres whats done:

  1. obviously, the tower was chopped off, and a heatsink made to fit.
  2. tube was bored and chopped to accept a 26650
  3. tailcap spring chopped and put inside tailcap to get it a little shorter.
  4. head end of battery tube was also chopped to get the head down closer to the switch
  5. its got an xml2 (u2 i think) and a custom programmed nanj driver @ 3.5a.

oh… and a ar lens too… i think thats it

here is the heat sink, driver and xml2 on the sinkpad waiting to dry

now a head on shot of that xml2 in the trimmed down mag reflector. i may be changing this out at a later time. thinking about an aluminium (for my foreign friends) orange peel one

and here is a shot of it next to an ordinary blue 2d LED maglite. you can tell this 26650 mag is not your typical blue mag. from my understanding, there was a batch of c cell mags that the blue anno had a purplish tint to it, and i was lucky enough to find one for a good price (thanks allthumbs!)

that is all for now. i could not for the life of me get the driver to solder to the heat sink. i will end up using some adhesive to keep it in.
and i will also need to get the driver soldered to the switch, which i think will require removing the c ring, and pulling the switch out of the head end.

other than that, thanks vestureofblood for the fine machining work.

update:
needed to do something else with it since the stock reflector would not work with the 20mm sinkpad. so i ordered up a new one from dx
http://dx.com/p/sst-50-smooth-aluminum-reflector-5-1cm-diameter-47997
after about a crap ton of filing (from 51mm to a little under 49mm) i got this bad boy to fit. and since the xml/xre plastic cetering disks (dont know the correct term) would not fit on the xml2, i had to get crafty. i coated the bottom of the reflector with electrical tape 8)

now to the testing

did some runs on the lux meter. now my lux meter reads my ea4w consistently at 17300-17400 cd.
i took my readings on the x10 setting

2m = 980 = 39200@1m
3m = 422 = 37980@1m

think xml in a c8 beam profile. almost the same size hot spot and spill size.
with my trusty new sanyo 1500s, im reading just over 3a at the tail now also. need some 26650s

thats all for now. sometime i got to upload some more pics and clean this post up a bit… someday

ouch! must be 1300 genuine lumens OTF?

to be honest… im not really sure what it will be putting out… let me look it up see if your in the ball park

I think you recieved a host….

yup!
anyone know where theres an xml2 output graph? quick search didnt find one

Check here

thanks. didnt know scaru had xml2 in that list yet… hes on it

but, the chart ends before the current this driver will push…

Hehe, I had a feeling it might J)

Very nice start, how many amps is that driver ? 10 chips ?

what host?

did you reflow that yourself?

10 chips yes

i did not reflow it myself, it came with the lot

the epoxy is set enough where it wont move, and i got the driver soldered to the star… can not get the driver soldered to the pill… so i will have to use adhesive

but im stinking tired right now, so i will pick it up tomorrow.

ok. im not good at holding out… ask my fiance lol so its a blue/purple 2c mag. heres whats done:

  1. obviously, the tower was chopped off, and a heatsink made to fit.

  2. tube was bored and chopped to accept a 26650

  3. tailcap spring chopped and put inside tailcap to get it a little shorter.

  4. head end of battery tube was also chopped to get the head down closer to the switch

its got an xml2 (u2 i think) and a custom programmed nanj driver @ 3.5a.

oh… and a ar lens too… i think thats it

edit: oops forgot the pics

thats a blue 2d led mag black friday special its next to. hard to tell the color differance

well done pulsar! i love mag mods

it wasnt me that did the mods… i had vestureofblood do the actual mod work. i just told him what exactly i wanted done, and he finely executed my dreams. no machining tools, or skills to use machining tools to do any of this. i could have done the tailcap mod… lol
vestureofblood has done some fine work on the machining of this thing. thanks if you are reading this

next one im thinking of having made is a chopped d. maybe a tripple? not sure yet. but wayne will be doing the next. not that VoB did bad work, he did great work, just want a chicago x custom in the collection

i have a 2d mag im thinking of chopping to 1d…. but thats a project for another day - lots of mods in the works now that my intl outdoor order came yesterday

updated the first post with all the info so far. will update it as i progress on this. my daughter has a birthday party today and one tomorrow, so its a busy weekend. might not get much done, but am going to try tonight

i got it all together tonight, and i gotta say… i love it.

not real pleased with the stock reflector though. that will get updated. has a huge black hole in the center. i think its because the stock lens sits right on the solder pads for the 20mm star. im working on filing some notches in it right now to see if getting it to sit further down on the led will help. and by eyeballing it, it looks like the stock LED mag reflector has a smaller opening, not much but maybe enough to work

Which reflector do you have in it now? MagLED reflector’s focal point is right at the bottom lip.

is a stock incan reflector with the cam chopped off. problem with me, not having any mag modding experience, designing a mag mod lol

I too have found that incan reflectors have to be chopped so much it causes a huge hole at the bottom.

Seems like the focal point was much higher for incan bulbs.

Nice job though Pulsar. Looks real nice too.

Don’t eat too much b/day cake and drink too much or you’ll forget the beamshots
