Looking for a dim bulb

I’m looking for a standard edison screw base 110/120v bulb that can be used in a outdoor porch fixture. I want something dim. Basicly, I want a nightlight bulb, but something with a standard base and rated to work in damp or outdoor locations.

I’m using the Lights of America 4W LED bulbs (from Costco, but I think the ones from Walmart are the same) right now and they are actually somewhat quite a bit brighter than I really want.

I’m also not willing to pay a lot, since I already have something that works, even if not ideal for the situation.

Any source for really low powered bulbs?

put a 400PIV/PRV, 3A diode in series with an incandescent bulb and get very low power and very very long life. They used to sell these as a coin sized insert for the socket.

And he should know!

(don’t try to use that with a CFL though)

Here are a few options:

Thanks for the replies. But I guess I should have mentioned that I’m looking to keep the efficiency of an LED bulb (or CCFL if that’s all I can find).

You can be the guinea pig and let us know if it meets your specifications  . No reviews yet.

So close:

And it’s on clearance for $0.29!

But… it’s red. (They do have green for the same price!)

And they have a white one too, http://www.bulbs.com/espec.aspx?ID=13973&RefId=380 , but 12.29 plus 7.95 for shipping. And they say it’s indoor/outdoor rate, nice. I might try one if I could get it locally, even though it’s still more than I really wanted to spend.

tempting, but I really want something that claims to be OK for outdoor or damp locations. UL listed as well.

How great is it that DB was the first person to respond to this thread title?

This same bulb seems to be available at tinydeal.com. The package indicates usability as a “lawn lamp”, which I take to mean outdoors. Not sure if the ratings on the bottom side of the package are similar to UL listing.

Disclaimer:
One reviewer said “Worked fine but they are blue. Very low lumens, build quality was fine - all that I ordered worked but the issue was just very little light and very blue”

Try home depot, mine often has dim led bulbs in the clearance bin

I bought one of these lights at Lowes . It has a dim illumination level until the motion sensor is triggered , then it comes on at full brightness . To make it even dimmer , I use a 25 watt bulb in it . The dim light attracts fewer insects . At full brightness it is bright enough for my purposes .

It has been installed for 4 months so far and has been trouble-free .

I understand that you are only looking for a bulb , but I wanted to share .

xD
I was about to say that. It’s the first thing that popped into my head.

Sherlock, your inquiry has picqued my interest. I’ll try to find something that fits the bil, but I’m making no promises…

I hear there’s several dim bulbs available in the Washington DC area.

Now there are a lot of dimmable bulbs ,with different bulb base . could be used indoor or outdoor. even GU10/MR16 spotlight could also be dimmable that use different places

Yeah and they’re all for sale!

Problem is, they’re WAY too expensive, even for “the greatest nation on Earth”!

Wishing the “Brightness” button on the TVs the electorate is watching, worked….

So true. Sad, ain't it..

Dorcydirect has an outdoor motion sensor LED light for around $25 — brown bullet-shaped thing, uses three D alkalines. I used some already outdated but unused D cells and they ran it for a full year, got fairly dim in the last month but still gave enough light to see the steps that are otherwise completely in shadow at night. And I’d stuck a sheet of yellow transparent plastic film over the LED which is typical blue-white.

I dropped the first one I bought and it quit working before I got it up in the tree over the steps; they cheerfully sent me another one free, I guess they’re not meant to bounce — and that’s served just fine. The three D cells were flat dead according to my ZTS tester when I replaced them last week (but the motion detection feature and the light were still working).

This one’s 15 lumens.

Edit: 12 lumens in WW and higher CRI.
