DIY Breakdown Truck lights

Hi there,

Newbie here just after some advice (or reassurance that what I’m thinking is the best idea).

Basically I use by 4x4 for recovery work but the price of light bars is stupidly high so I figured I could make my own!

My plan was to use some CREE Yellow or Amber 3 watt LED’s. So I got some from ebay and they’re not much good really as in they’re not bright.

LED strips was my next idea but again they aren’t too bright. What do the proper lightbars use as they are damn bright!?

My latest attempt is some of these…

20w White LED

and then some yellow lighting gels to give the right colour.

Anybody got any suggestions or better ideas? I’m in the UK if that makes a difference…

Cheers.

Not sure about those ebay leds you linked… there’s lots of spec inflation, especially from the asian countries. I’d say give one a try and see, but don’t expect much for that little money.

I’m out of my depth, electronic engineering-wise, but I think you also need to put something between the automotive power supply and the led to filter out voltage spikes that will kill electronics. (There are led drivers out there that are suitable for auto use, but I think you’re looking at bigger £££.)

If you can share your overall budget, you’ll probably get some good ideas here.

And welcome to the forum!

I’ve got one of them and to be honest it’s pretty damn bright. But also very hot. I’ve no heat sink on it so only had it running for maximum of 10 seconds at a time.

I’m curious as to what professional light bars use as I absolutley cannot find any mega bright (blindingly bright) amber LED’s but they must exist.

I haven’t really got a budget except cheap as possible. I’d like to probably spend no more than about $60 in total for the whole truck which owuld have 4 at the back and 4 at the front.

Thanks for your time.

How about this? CheapThrills seems happy with it.

Since a few of us are still ‘thinking’ about modding up our lawn tractors and snowblowers (okay, could just be me on that) to throw a little bit more light on our tasks… thanks for the link, I had missed that one.

This is an interesting product. I have seen and will have to go back and look again, online, similar 12v products that were more value priced to my eye. Certainly the good stuff (like Baja Designs) is GOOD, but ever so pricey!

I was wondering if you are doing “recovery work for hire”, you would probably need something that meets MOT standards, or you could be looking at a stop and fine situation at some point?

You might be right, but from what I can understand from the Construction & Use regulations regarding lighting is that as long is they are not Blue, Red, green etc. then there are no actual standards unless working on live lanes of a motorway (which won’t be the case) it’s usually snow recovery or the like.

I’ve got a few of the 20w versions on their way to me and some 10w ones that I managed to get for a steal from the bay so I’m gonna rig something up and see what happens. They’re certainly blinding to look at.
