I watched it a while ago... The thing that shocked me the most wasn't that some people could set fire to the water coming out of their taps (faucets) it was that the water supply wasn't in anyway treated or monitored.

Suddenly the obsession with bottled water made sense. Sadly people in the UK have been brain washed by American movies, TV and the bottled water companies into thinking their product is in some way better than tap water. Which it isn't, as the regulations on bottled water are far less strict that on the mains water supply.

You're in a place where this will likely never become an issue. Google "Canton, PA" or "Dimock, PA". Either one of these should link to something about the water contamination that has already happened.

An additional problem is the destruction of the roads going to and from the gas pads, Some of these roads were formerly paved. Now, I would hesitate to ride my dualsport on some of them. I can handle gravel OK, but gravel atop a hard surface is like riding on marbles. It doesn't help that this April had the highest rainfall in God knows when. We had 20 inches, which nearly half of our normal annual total. The ground, including the roadbeds, is very soft.

I am not against making money, and I've been bitching about the US' problem of energy independence for over 50 years. What I fear is then the cost of environmental clean up will exceed the "savings". And after it's all done, we'll still be dependent on foreign countries for energy. Google "algae biodiesel" , and click on the synopsis from the University of New Hampshire. We've been studying this subject since 1978. Go ahead, take a look. For those of you in the US, it is your tax dollars that funded this study. But instead of utilizing this as a natural resource, we spend billions trying to curtail algae growth in the Chesapeake Bay. I think that is impossible, BTW. Algae lines every coastline in the world. I think it has become a permanent, self-sustaining feature of our environment. You former Sailors will know what I mean. When you're out at sea. the air smells clean. When you approach land, the stench resumes.

While growing up in the Philippines (60's-70's), we had to boil our water and what's sad is that you still have to boil it today or spend a fortune on bottled water. I guess that's life in a third world country.

Well, your post opened my eyes.

There's a possibility I'm mixing two things up. Did they not talk about drilling in New York state in Gasland? It could quite easily be that I'm mixing details in from an other documentary as I watch quite a lot of them.

The worry was that the worryingly toxic fracking chemicals would end up leaking into the water supplied to NY.
