Thats funny because somebody took my backpack out of my car a couple of weeks ago. They rooted through it and took my old crappy coffee cup, leaving a sipik and two romisens in the bag. WTF?
Sorry to hear this lfrit, that is the most frustrating experience, I know firsthand.
I'm awaiting with dread the day in which I will probably post a similar thread here... Crime and break-ins are out of control around these parts. Actually come to think of it I probably wouldn't be able to post it very quickly because they would steal my laptop too. And it's not just at night that they break in, in fact it's rarely at night. Rather, prime-time for thieves is around midday, especially when it's raining hard and the owner is methodical and usually isn't home at that time of day. And when they break in around here, they usually steal everything- clothes, colognes, electronics, tools, generators, you name it.
It most definitely is frustrating and infuriating someone dug through my personal belongings and took a lot of stuff, some of which is irreplaceable... I am just trying to keep a light mood about it. This is the second time that a residence i've been in has been broken into.
It did actually occur around midday. I was out golfing and when i came back, things weren't tossed around but i had a feeling someone
had been in my house. It's almost as if they thought, "If i only take what i can carry in my pockets, maybe they won't notice i was here."
What can you do i guess. Assholes are assholes and there's nothing to be done about it.
For me, this is the most disturbing part. Invasion of privacy, the feeling that an unknown faceless person has walked around inside your own home just grates against everything that makes us human, and it is uniquely disquieting.
I agree. I haven't had my house broken into yet, but the old van that I drive to work was rifled through one time while it was in my driveway. Its not worth much so I leave it unlocked and don't leave anything in it so there was absolutley no loss for me, but I still felt violated. (I keep a light on me and in my bag and it only gets driven to work by me so I don't leave any lights in it either.) Jut got in one morning to go to work and both visors were pulled down and the glovebox and ashtray were open.
Theives don't like theives ..it's dumb world we live in sometimes ..people even know what might happen if they get caught ..If someone ends up dead or shot for breaking into someones house no one is surprised ..Clearly people aren't thinking correctly that's why I'm like OLD4570..I hope they take waht they need leave the personal stuff and realize very quickly it's not worth risking their lives for a few dollars .i value the theives life more than he does . i won't kill a guy over stuff .
What did you think they were asking for when thye said " hey mister got a dime for some coffee "?? when a caffine addict is jonesing for some "JOE ".. stand back..
Somehow that makes sense ... it wasn't one of those coffee cups that looks like a cannon zoom lens was it ?
I just can’t figure out why there is a coffee cup shaped like a camera lens. Something even more goofy than the flashlight/mp3 player that was being peddled around here not long ago.
Yeah , I used to [ still do ] have a nice Recurve Bow Collection , Model Airplane engines , Stamps , Pocket Knives , stuff thats taken years to collect ..(20+)
Owning nice stuff , its a burden . If and when we come out of this economic slump [ next peak ] , I might have to liquidate .
Hell when I first started driving years ago, I had a VW dasher wagon. Somebody broke in and left me a stereo on the seat. How sad must I have been driving that thing?
Sorry to hear about that, lfrit. People who have no regard for other's property suck and there's little difference between a burglar and someone who hits a parked car and takes, off in my book.
Fortunately, daytime break-ins are pretty rare around these parts because even the most stupid lowlifes realize that it's not wise career choice to risk a personal encounter with Mr. 12ga over a TV set and some loose change. That obviously excludes drug addicts. When I lived in South Florida a good while back, it wasn't uncommon for hobos and drug addicts to break into parked cars. They'd often take any cash and valuables they could find or sometimes just sleep in the back or use the car as a toilet. I remember when that happened to a friend of mine who returned to his car in the morning, only to find his window smashed in and human excrement in the back seat. Talk about adding insult to injury.
As for stealing flashlights, most people consider flashlights essentially disposible. Some people would recognize a large Maglite as a valuable and fenceable item but I doubt Joe Sixpack could tell an expensive light from a Walmart cheapo. It's easy for us to forget that collecting flashlights is essentially a niche hobby and few people have more than one good flashlight because that's really all they need and beyong "it works when I need it", they really couldn't care less.
It's a shame they stole your collection of flashlights that cost just under the amount you need to declare each....wink wink.
I think it was '98 when my old house was broken into, they rifled through everything. The wierdest thing is that they then emptied the dirty washing out of the bag I had it in and then presumably filled it with a stack of backup CD's....they then left.
What always befuddled me the most was that they ignored the TV and VCR that I had bought the day before, their boxes were still on the floor next to them.
Ifrit: Sorry to hear about your robbery. If it's just 'a few pockets of stuff', and they left obviously fenceable/cashable goods, it's entirely possible that it's local kids.
As for being offended about them leaving the lights, I wouldn't bother. We (the collective forum we) spend good money on LED's with specific bins/colours/drivers, batteries that look like they were looted from industrial machinery, and quality is square-cut threads and good lube. To the average person, a flashlight is a flashlight, and Mag-Lite is like Leatherman. The only name brand, hence the only valuable one.
Sorry to hear that. I'm still living in a country where robberies are kind of common but still not "going out of control" if the wording could apply that it can be controlled somehow.
My best guess is, it is for sneaking alcohol into sporting events.
As for everyone else, thanks for the condolences. I was able to get most of my stuff back! Yay!! Unfortunately i am out two sterling silver zippos that were monogramed w/ my nickname on them. Other than that, i THINK i have everything.(i'll never know for sure) So as far as robberies go, this one wasn't too bad. No one was injured and only a couple of moderately priced items are missing.
