Feit steps up their game, 7.5 watt, 500 lumen, omnidirectional bulb

The LED light bulb game was changed big time with Cree's introduction of their 40 and 60 watt equivalent bulbs at somewhat reasonable prices. Alas, nearest home depot is an hour away from me and I didn't feel like ordering enough for free shipping. However, while strolling through Menards the other day, I discovered this bulb from Feit.

Normally I steer clear from Feit as my experience with their CFL's and early generation LED bulbs has been less than good. But, at the regular price of $6.64, I figured I'd buy a few and give it a shot. There was a fixture that I really wanted to replace the bulbs in with something other than CFL anyway. The price is quite surprising, undercutting the competing Cree by over $3.

Initial impressions are good. Build seems solid. Globe part seems to be the typical plastic. Output seems about right for the lumen rating, though I have not tested it. My wife gave them a huge thumbs up from an aesthetic viewpoint. Despite being labeled soft white, color temp is 3k. If I had to guess, it may actually be a little higher than that. It is a much more white color than the sickly yellow of 2700K CFL's and incans. I'll try to take some pics tonight if I have time. I haven't popped one open yet, but spec sheet says that they use 11 emitters.

Longevity has been a problem with Feit bulbs in the past so I'll have to see how these hold up long term. If you are near a Menards, I recommend giving these a try at this price. Evidently Costco also sells these in a multi-pack at a similar per bulb price but I can not confirm . Definitely the best value I've found for an LED bulb that can genuinely replace a typical household bulb. Spec sheets are here:
