K40 6.5A (Vinh Modded) Just In & Tested

Guys, I just in a K40 from Vinh. This is one of the batch he’s been doing for a lot of members here. It’s the 6.5A XM-L2 dedomed version.
I haven’t been able to use it at night yet, but so far, I’m impressed with it. It is smaller than I thought. Noticeable smaller head than the TN31. So that more compact size is kinda nice knowing its awesome potential. Looks are nice. Anodizing looked perfect in my eyes. I like the air fins on the head vs the smooth head of the TN31. Also noticed the power selector ring has a more snug operation. I’ve never had issues with the TN31, but this might help prevent accidental power changes.
I did fortunately have time to do testing on it. Lumens and lux.
As a quick disclaimer, I do feel I was slightly off on my distance on my TN31 test previously. I truthfully didn’t realize just how critical it is to be exact on longer test distances, especially with these very powerful lights. I’m use to lights with 20-60k etc… And my 1m test has a special testing device to control it too exactly 1m. And testing them at longer distances like 15m, being off a foot too close or back makes very little difference. Only 1-2K. However move 1 foot too close with a 500k light - it makes roughly 14k difference in throw. I do apologize for letting my test standards slip a little previously.
So I made very good measurements this time. Checked them twice. Tested the TN31mb, TN31(6.5A), and K40(6.5A). All tested at 15m. Exactly this time. And this time my TN31mb tested almost exact with Saablusters official results. So I’m confident these numbers are about as accurate as us hobbiest can get.
So here we go -
——————————-
TN31mb - 414K
TN31-6.5A - 495k
K40-6.5A - 394K
———————————-
Lumen numbers -
Level 6(0 sec) - 1700 lumens
Level 6(30 sec) - 1625 lumens
Level 5 - 1495 lumens
Level 4 - 1050 lumens
Level 3 - 523 lumens
Level 2 - 23 lumens
Level 1 - .7 lumens
—————————————
So guys there we go. It is slightly lower than the TN31, especially in throw. But with the noticeably smaller head and shorter length, I feel these numbers are very respectable. A Vinh modded K40 really rocks! And any of you guys working on your own version - go for it, you won’t regret it.
Fortunately with Vinh’s fast service, my K40 made it just in time for our photo shoot. Brother and I are doing this thing tonite. Appx 25 lights. The headline lights are TN31-6.5A, K40-6.5A, TN31mb, FF4, BTU XML2 direct drive, BTU XML2, Yezl 85wt, SR90 w/SBT70, TK75, T08 (208K), TN31 dedomed (4.2A), TN31 Stock, and a bunch more throwers and a few flooders thrown in for fun.
Here is a couple quick shots of Vinh supercharged lights -

wow, that was super speedy service! hahah perfect timing for the shootout too.
cant wait to get mine. im liking the looks and size of it. only wish it had that alum bezel like the tn31 though.

those numbers sound great. jmpaul got 360k on his i believe.
what was the lumens on the tn31 again?

Very nice!! I can’t wait to see the pictures from this all out thrower event!!

are any of your shockers, tom E ’s super shockers by any chance? i have one of those coming too, and would be nice to see how that pairs up with the rest of the troop

394K is awesome for this light really due to the shorter and narrower reflector. Might as well say that’s 400K on most days. And that’s a steal for the price.

Thanks for the post.

I am going to test again this evening at 14-15m and see if the number goes up at all

How do the hotspots compare size-wise? I believe he said the K40 has a bigger one, right? Would leaving the dome on make for a wider hotspot? Thanks.

i got 364 on mine at 15meters - average of 6 tests

30k difference could easily be my meter or your meter. Or a healthier bin. Or weather even. We’re in the same ballpark.

Brother, who was operating the lights, said they were very close, but the K40’s spot looked slightly bigger.

Yes, two sort of. Mine has the stock driver but full Tom magic otherwise. Measured 3740 lumens and 181k. Brother just got his super shocker today from Tom. His has the IOS driver and is appx 4400 lumens and 220k with Samsung 20r’s. I have Keeppower 3400 protected in mine. Brothers doesn’t have his AR lens yet.

+/- 10% is acceptable - my meter reads a hair low if anything so i have always stood by its numbers since they are conservative if anything.

led bins vary so does driver efficiency etc.

I am currently emailing vinh about a vostro mod to 6.5a

he is intrigued by reflector size and host

here we go again guys

I received my Vinh modded Supbeam K40 and I'm quite impressed. Can't wait for it to get dark so I can take it outside.

One question for you... for mine, if I go into strobe mode, I can't go back into any of the other modes. Not without turning the light off completely via the main switch.

Is this also the case with yours?

I just checked mine and it does not do that. I can go back and forth from strobe and level six.

I can go freely into or out of any mode

Hmm, well, that's something. Not big deal really... I don't use strobe, but still it's odd. Just emailed Wayne to see what he says.

For me, I have the 6 modes, and standby, works perfectly with that. Once I go into strobe though, going back into any of the other modes, it stays on strobe.

A quick click on/off brings it back to the mode it's supposed to be in though.

Heard back from Wayne. He's offered to fix or swap it.

That said though, I don't know how I'm going to bring myself to send it back.

I took it outside, and it absolutely, embarrassingly blew away my other throwers. I thought the Armytek Barracuda might hold up, or the Crelant with the Aspheric. Nope. Not even close. The K40 just obliterates them.
