This will be my most powerful build yet. (12) XM-L2@3A

I few weeks ago I came across this at KD:

http://www.kaidomain.com/product/details.S022371

I oredered it and was very pleased with the quality and how it is nice and compact. The AK-90 I built with XM-L2 LEDs and HB driver is a true toliet plunger.

I immediately installed the battries in my new “shorty” and gave it a try. Eh, it was bright, just not my kinda bright. I didn’t even make a good effort to measure lux or kcd.

It was in my possession a total of maybe 20 minutes before it was all taken apart. I flowed all components off the stock driver and wired a Hyperboost driver in front of it. I then converted the 2S3P battery configuration into 6S1P. I then removed all of the XML T6 LEDs from the head and now I’m just waiting for thw XM-L2 U2 LEDs to arrive tomorrow or Saturday. My AK-90 output is 87.1 watts. This shorty will be running 2.8-3A to the emitters. I will try 2.8A first. Then I will go up from there. At 2.8A the output will be 110.8 watts. If I dare to go to 3A it will be a blistering 118.8 watts! Im excited to find out if the driver will handle it.

I did some searches for anyone else that did somthing similar but came up with nothing. Has anyone else rbuilt a 12x led light like mine?

This will probably make me want to sell my AK-90. (Maybe)

Eyes boggle. Wow.

Awesome!

Oooh. Oooh. Dedome the middle four. See if it will throw a little bit as well with 12k lumens. Is that right? That’s a lot of light!

wow… you make me want to buy that light… btw do you have the picture of the hyperboost driver or link?

http://www.taskled.com/techhboost.shtml

Thats the driver I been using. I want to get the HBflex next. It is programable to different modes. George is a great guy.

Ken

I have dedomed a few of the XM-L2 U2 LEDs. I dont really care for the yellow color afterwards.

The LEDs are going to be on copper sinkPADs.

According to Match’s tests, it will be 14k+ lumens?

Ken

can you start working on a second one for me?

ill send you my wallet

kk tks

Hahaha! I barely have time for my own projects!

What is the head Diameter of this light. I was thinking about it for a multi mtg2 or MKr light.

What are out going to feed it with? Point it my way, I might be able to see it

Right now its eating 100 dollar bills!

Probably Panasonic 18650s.

Im “suppose” to keep the input current about 6A. I think I can get away with a hair more if need be.

Ken

Sorry for the double quote. I was trying to edit.

It uses the exact same reflector as my TF AK-90. I dont have it in front of me right now but specs on head diameter should be the same as the AK-90.

Ken

Youre running at 25V input? Sounds a bit scary, but I dont have any experience running 6S.

If you can manage it, Id love to see some pics of how you modded for the different battery config.

How do you like the overall quality of the host. Any gripes?

6x3.7=22.2 nominally. The 6S1P was not as hard as I expected. Basically I just turned a set of the batteries around and cut one contact strip on the switch board.
The contact plate on the driver end is very big. I used silicone tape to insulate one side and made a copper braid for the battery contacts.

Build quality is excellent. I am by no means the type of person that would pick fly crap out of pepper but, I can pick out a bad job when I see one.

Oh and by the way. DO NOT convert this light to 6S1P with the stock driver. It will fail.

Ken

I realized that I should have noted my lux measurements when it was stock. I’m going to order another one just to compare stock to modded.

Ken

This light is gonna be Bad Ass. Can’t wait to see how the Hyperboost preforms. I too have been planing a build around a HB driver. I was thinking about the HBFlex but I’m kinda scared after reading the instruction manual.

Yeah the HBflex sems a bit complicated to configure to me too. I have a H6flex that I plan to put in my TK70 some day. Im sure it can’t be that bad to configure. The HB is simple. All or nothing! This will be my second build with the HB. I am very pleased.

Ken

yea, while your at it, minus well make another at the same time for me. do you take paypal? hahah
cant wait to see how this turns out.

so your ak90 cannot be modded 14k lumens, just 10k max?
