My #$%@# pocket rocket >> MT-G2 zoomable SK98

Hi all,

Have been reading blf for months now, really liked the community here and this is my first post so i thought i’ll share one of my flashlight builds
I thought i’ll post it here first as it seems more relevant (It is a budget light afterall)

I really liked cree’s MT-G2 emitter, so I built my first T10b MT-G2 light a few months back… But still i felt its too big and not really pocketable… I wanted to build a light you could keep in your pocket and light up a whole room if you needed to

Received an Ultrafire SK98 (Sipik Sk98 clone) and thought, gee… if i could fit the MT-G2 in the T10b, why not cram it into the SK98??

So …

The led is HUGE compared to my nitecore SRT5 (ok not really since it has an aspheric lens but still… :D)

Note : SK98 MT-G2 itself is smaller in size then the SRT5, but weights slightly heavier (due to driver and 2 x imr)

This thing can literally flood an entire room with light, focusing it makes it throw better… but it the throw beam is still huge, it makes up for it will sheer brightness

This ultrafire SK98 was one of the lucky ones that passed the hollow pill lottery (mine was a solid pill)…

Light is running on a iOS 4.5a 3 mode driver (H,M,L) powered by 2 x IMR AW 18350 cells, and yes, it zooms

Guestimate brightness would be about 2,500 LED lumens on high (tailcap about 4~ amps), 1,000-ish lumens on medium and maybe 150-ish lumens on low

On high, It gets warm within a few seconds of using and HOT after about a minute, surprisingly, on medium and low mode, it doesn’t get really hot and on low theres practically no heat

Beamshots!! Note, on the left is my SRT5 on max output (750 ansi lumens), on the left, SK98 MT-G2 fully zoomed out

Merry Christmas all!!

OMG

hi mmh welcome first port?
ty for share looks like a beehive

+1!

Awesome! I'll bet that thing gets hot FAST! It's like a nitrous boosted muscle car!

Welcome to BLF by the way :-)

Hi everyone thanks for the welcome

Might be making more of those soon, its hard to comprehend how bright this light really is, and yes it gets hot really fast… but its still usable, on high mode its really more for shock and awe (or blinding a whole group of people :D), but on medium and low its still ok, on medium its still on par with many other lights on their highest mode (800+ lumens), even on low, its STILL bright enough to light up the whole area in front of you to allow walking (due to its insane flood)

Also, i really like the tint on it, neutral white (for reference look at the beehive photo), although its not hcri but its tint is still nicer to look at, I carry this along with me on a daily basis

Awesome . Introductory . Post .

Welcome .

I wonder how it would work with a frosted aspheric lens?

Have you modded the switch if not you will never see the measured current.
Have you take some lux measurements…I guess not you will get upset.

I have modded a sk98 with 3 xml2u2 and recognized that the aspheric steals so many lumens…

welcome and very nice mod

Wow and welcome. Orsm.

PS - Can you do outside beamshots @ maybe 50m on the different levels?

whoa… never seen a MT-G2 in a such small light before, hmm… got me some ideas now
and yeah… welcome to BLF, you definitely belong here

Welcome to the forum ghos! :)

Cery cool! 8) Im surprised you can actually run it for a full minute in H mode… not to bad for a mega pocket-rocket.

Presenting a mod with an emitter more expensive than the host is a fine way to enter BLF

Welcome!

Love the mod. Welcome to the forum ghos. Now that's joining BLF in style.

Does it kick like a magnum?

Hi guys, thanks again for the welcome!!

@Old-Lumens - Hmm dunno but maybe if i can get another sk98 can try taking sandpaper and making a diy frosted aspheric

@FlashPilot - You could, but i wouldn’t recommend it as it seriously heats up to the point you can’t even hold it without burning yourself, this thing is HOT

@GottaZoom - Hmm will try taking some comparison beamshots tonight at my warehouse if i have the time

@Illuminaria - Yeah and it burns like one too, shine it too near a wall at high mode and you’ll blind yourself

@cat eyes - I got it from one of those aliexpress sellers, but i think his store was closed due to too many fraud cases, mine actually came after 2 months (the first time was because it got held up at customs, or so they say), the sk98 i receive didn’t even match the one that was posted, his photo had a sharp bezel, mine is slightly curved, which looks nicer imo and the build quality is surprisingly not bad… i’m still looking for a good sk98 supplier though, will be flying to china in jan to personally buy up all the LEDs, drivers and hosts
