just got my D40a LOOKS TO BE SMALL DEFECT need advice

I just got my D40a today and It’s a wonderful light, but my concern Is that the emitter Is scratched/damaged.
I’m not really sure If It’s something I should be concerned about or If It’s just live on with it.

Where did you buy it from ? I would get it exchanged tbh. Unless you can open it and clean the emitter with a cotton swab or something

That looks like a smudge of something rather than a scratch. If you are careful you should be able to remove the bezel, the reflector should then fall out (easiest to remove the bezel with light facing down then gravity will hold the lens and reflector with it), then you can gently clean the emitter dome with a cotton bud and water (spit may be more effective) and it should come off. Re-assemble and problems sorted, just be careful not to allow any dust inside the lens/reflector assembly while disassembled and to be gentle with the emitter.

If you don’t want to try this then it shouldn’t really affect the beam anyway but I would consider it good enough grounds for a return.

I got it from doingoutdoor.
thanks for the help and advice guys.
I’ll contact them (bill) and request a replacement.
thanks again!

Don’t use water, use alchahol. I clean all my LEDs after I’ve been working on then. It won’t hurt the emitter, and it dissolves things like flux.

Hmm I’m not liking this… There was someone who complained about a D40A yesterday and he/she got it from doingoutdoor.com

Also, I contacted sunwayman and asked them about the tint. They say that the neutral white uses 3B. Bill told me it is 4C…

When I gave them the product link, Sunwayman said that doingoutdoor is not a direct dealer for sunwayman…

They have asked for the serial number to verify the tint / origin but of course I do not have it yet. (i ordered it from doingoutdoor too)

Guess I play the waiting game and hope it turns out ok.

I sent bill an email.
I will wait for a reply.
I didn’t want to take it apart myself.
So I contacted him Instead.

Bills a pretty good guy to deal with. I think he’ll make it right.

you could also go another direction with this - send it to vinh on cpf and he will upgrade the emitter to whatever color tint you like mounted on copper and tweak it to do about 1400 lumen on turbo

i think he charges around 35 for this

I have one and as of yesterday was in LA. Got mine from BG, so will see how it looks upon arrival. And thinking of sending several lights to Vinh to have work done, unless I find someone else in the meantime that can do a fast turn around for a good price.

My D40A from doingoutdoor had small anodization flaws at the bottom of it, I got partial refund, I think it was 5$.

Perhaps Bill is getting “A- grade” lights from other retailers or from bulk-resellers that get them from Sunwayman directly?

Got mine in yesterday from Banggood I think, can’t keep track without looking. All I can find is a small scratch between the switch and lettering on a sharp edge. By the time I drop it a few times or lay it around, will prolly have a lot more.

I got a NW version from Banggood several days ago. It’s in great condition, no flaws that I can see. One thing I did notice is that I don’t think it is the newer version with the modified spring.
I would say tint is 3b. I don’t know this for sure but definately not as yellow as my Convoy S2.

Modified spring? I guess I missed this, how do you tell?

Sorry, I don’t have any pics but there are a couple of posts here on blf about it. Apparently some people have complained about the spring on the driver end bending and not making contact. Sunwayman apparently fixed the problem on an updated version. I beleive it was a stronger spring placed slightly different in the head. I was hoping the NW one I just got would have been the updated version by now ( seeing as the D40A is so popular) buts it’s the same as the CW version I have which is the original one. I however have never had any problems with it. Just thought I would mention it

now that is a major bargain

I talked to Sunwayman before having different issues and they will help you, especially if you are serious with them. I would trust Sunwayman staff and they always ask for the serial number.

You can buy a box of individually wrapped disposable wipes for cleaning computer screens. Each wipe contains a disposable microfiber cloth soaked in alcohol. Works great for cleaning emitters.
