Phaserburn's Diffusion Film - DC Fix - BLF Service & Int'l Shipping

I have been offering this film over on CPF, but realized that many requests were coming from BLF, so here it is!

Hello, All. I am going to provide diffusion film as a service to BLF, because I think it’s a great find for any true flashaholic. I got the tip from Cave Dave, so kudos to him!

A few words about this stuff. If you like diffuse, super floody smooth beams, this is for you. It. Is. Awesome! If functions very much like the LDF film that flashlightlens sells attached to UCL lenses. It diffuses more than writeright, and adheres much better. Throw is greatly diminished, but many lights may appear brighter to you because all of the lumens are now only 10 feet or so from your eyes most of the time, vs being thrown downfield (my observation). Lights often retain a muted hotspot that is much larger and smoother. It creates my favorite beam - the directed flood. I’ve tried ALOT of diffusion ideas and tactics, and this is the one that rings the bell for me. I read on CPF that Selfbuilt tested this film and found only a tiny 3.2% total light reduction when used.

The film is self adhesive, tough, and sticks beautifully, much better than writeright, glad, etc. It comes off easily and leaves no issues that I’ve seen. Best practice, for me, is, where possible, remove the lens, apply the film, and then re-install with the film facing the reflector. That way, the film is protected vs. water, pocket friction, etc. This works fabulously with led lights. I have not tested it on high power incans, as the heat would be quite different (radiated through the film vs backward into the heatsink mass for leds). I have used it on stock level incans, with no issues. I assume no liability for anything that this gets tried out on.

Great for:

•Converting the most craptastic beam to a work of art.
•XRE induced dark rings
•Eliminating color blobs, odd shaped coronas, rings and blending them together beautifully.
•5mm led lights with a lens.
•Great for headlamps! I’m not looking for throw on headlamps; this film opens up tons of previously overlooked HLs for reconsideration.
•Cheapies! Fun lights in your collection limited in value b/c their beam is fugly.
•Have multiple lights that basically fulfill the same role? Convert one to a flooder!

This film truly makes the above situations into new lights. If you have lights where you love the form factor, runtime, build, etc., but the beam leaves something to be desired, then try this stuff out.

Pricing:

4” x 8.75” sheets (the size of a #10 envelope) are available and will be shipped to you via 1st class USPS. Price is $3.50, which includes the Paypal fees and postage in the US. Outside the US, please add $2.25. Extra sheets are $1.50 each. Paypal addy: allen.david08@yahoo.com PM me your address for shipping if it’s not on your Paypal. Please include your BLF name on your Paypal, and please post here as well; it makes it easier for me to match things up. Thanks!

Each sheet is capable of filming probably every light in your collection that you want to try it on. If you have a large light you want to try it on, maybe get an extra sheet. Cutting a true circle is up to you. Many use a exacto/compass combo. They might be available at an office supply joint; maybe someone can post a link or info. Scissors work fine. Personally, I bought a circle stencil from Staples.

Full disclosure: I am not interested in playing games and keeping my source secret. This is the film; DC Fix. It’s the “sand”:

A large roll is available for $15 shipped in the US. If you want that much, order it from Berlin, as that’s the way to go.

Enjoy. You’ll love it, I guarantee it, or your money back! I believe this film should be in every BLF’ers supply box.

Nice link and plug by Illumination Gear!! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum , Phaserburn .

I have used this stuff on many lights . It does make any beam creamy smooth .

The way I put it on my lenses is to adhere a slightly oversize piece of film to the lens , then cut off the excess with a razor blade by using the edge of the lens as a cutting guide . I slant the razor at a forty-five degree angle to the lens and use light pressure .

I most recently applied some to a cheap headlamp someone alerted me to here on the forum . The headlamp arrived with a glaringly bright hotspot and the DC-Fix made the beam into an ideal profile for close up work .

Good stuff .

I’ll probably order some of this, it has been on my list forever. I love a floody beam. If anyone has any before/after beam shots, that would be nice. Going to put it on my newest Tangsfire C8 and see what that looks like.

edit: ordered

The material from berlinwall is also famous amongst the reef tank crowd. Its dirt cheap for an entire roll:

Welcome to the forum Phaserburn! Ive been meaning to alert others about this material but forgot…

Hard to show exactly what the effects are with a beamshot. The material effectively doubles the diameter of the hotspot and smooths the transition from hotspot to spill and extends the corona. The beam it creates is not perfectly smooth as you can see a bit of a “pebbled glass” effect up close, but it’s very hard to detect during actual use.

Overall, this is some of the best diffusion material out there for the price and ease of use.

Yea this stuff is amazing. I use it on a p60 with an XML2 and it makes it perfect for close range stuff. You don’t get that intense hotspot. If use a higher mode it can still throw decently well, enough to look down and light up everything on a trail at night.

barring a beamshot comparison, you have explained well what it would look like, thanks. When I get it I will post a before and after picture of the results on my Tangsfire. I’m not thrilled with the HOTSPOT on the light.

saypat - order shipped.

The hotspot will benefit greatly from the film. Basically, this film turns lights into what I refer to as, “directed flood”. There is still a hotspot usually, but far larger, smoother and with a much smoother transition to spill. Lights that ship with a diffusion lens (ET, for example) have their beam turn pretty much into a 180 degree spill. I’ve used this film in place of those lenses, as I prefer the beam. I’d be curious to hear people’s impressions. For indoors, up close/medium range, this film is great. I especially appreciate it when walking over uneven terrain (anything beyond pavement/lawn).

ordered, PM sent.
Thanks Phaserburn!
My Zebralight thanks you too.

actually just found BLF, you guys seem great!

Shipped!

This stuff is great for RGBW lights, especially those using an XM-L color with reflector.

I use it on most of the RGBW XM-l lights I ship, improves the color mixing to almost as good as using an optic.

Any sources in Europe? :frowning:

Do you have Dedeman? I bought a square meter from them for 5$.

If you can’t find any, as an alternative I have found that Blenderm tape works quite well. Available up to 50mm wide.

Beamshot

Don’t know how it compares to the ‘proper stuff’ though.

Nope, don’t have that. I guess I’ll just have to look around the local shops.

Is phaserburn still around? Or are there other sources?

I know you are in the states pilotdog

But if anyone in northern Europe want some DC-Fix they buy it at K-rauta.

Still here. Still got the film.
