Forum Being Overun By Spam

It’s been five times today that I’ve had to axe spam “kitchen” posts, and now shoes posts. Any idea what can be done to code better defenses into the registration process?

I don’t mind killing spam posts now and then, but this seems to be getting worse with each passing week.

So its your fault. I typed a funny, but now its gone. (I also marked it, it takes 7 reports I think to nuke SPAM)

On the Saucony one I replied with I shoo shoo shoose you…

Spam is everywhere, not just here. Like most things in life, the more you go looking for it, the more of it you'll find. It gets flagged and removed, it's not like somebody spray-painting a giant cock on the front of your house. :)

And, it's not as if it just vanishes and anyone needs to be alerted, all the stuff that gets flagged for removal ends up in a queue that SB monitors, so the dude in charge is aware of what's going on.

I think that the best thing to do when you see spam is to use the
“Mark as SPAM” button and do nothing else.

Yes, but there is a frequency after which repeated “mark as spam” actions become excessive. Having owned a forum, I am aware of things that can be done to keep bots from registering. Invisionfree - finally, after a great many years of not doing anything - put a system in place where a video contained a secret code answer to be able to get in. I’m just thinking other steps can be taking on top of what we are already doing (well).

Sorry, EF. Had no idea it was you on that one.

Right now I’m waiting for the JCPenney spam to be removed.

They mix their spam with what looks like a post narrative, and that slows up some people’s reactions to it.

It’s funny, it is still there, that weaving of the spam into what looks like a story, or a real life experience, works.

In the past I’ve had spam like that on forums and on ebay, and it turned out to be malware on MY pc. So unless you are referring specifically to spam posts, then I’d take a look at your pc to see if it has something on it that shouldn’t be there.

I use a Mac.

Since the time I posted this, at least 3 more spam posts were made—and then were flagged away (but not by me). My point stands. It shouldn’t be quite this often.

I was just expressing a concern and wanted to voice my experiences. Maybe “overrun by spam” was a little bit of a strong word choice at this point, but it seems it won’t be if this escalates further. I can’t be the only one noticing the increase.

Overrun is apt, one of them was for running shoes…

I am too security minded to get malware, I meant spam posts, that JC Penney spam was removed after about 10 minutes.

So send SB a message and find a polite way to let him know he's not running his site in a manner that meets your expectations. As I said he's aware of the stuff that gets flagged for removal and sees it all, it doesn't just vanish.

Next spammer that shows up and posts a bunch of crap, bookmark their profile page and check it every few days. Before long the profile (along with the rest of the account) will have disappeared, and you will get one of these:

Sorry

This page is no longer available, or maybe you need to login first.

Those junk accounts are being deleted manually by an actual human, and SB is perfectly capable of changing or not changing stuff as he sees fit. If there's something you think he needs to know about, send him a PM.

It’s been my experience that there is a little race to hit the spam button to be among the first, and NOT get the “”Sorry This page is no longer available, or maybe you need to login first.“” which means you were slow on the trigger.

Most spam is taken care of within a couple of minutes, but this narrative, story sounding spam sounds enough like an authentic post, that it seems to fool some readers.

Chances are if you get this message, youre the lucky number ‘X’. The one that actually nuked it. The camel that broke the spam straw. Im fairly certain there is a count required to nuke spam, going by number of reads on posts I ve marked, it seems to be about 7. Maybe a few people are wary of marking spam, so it could be 5 or so too. Regardless, if you got to the thread, it was there, so if you get that message, its likely you are the trigger man.

The spammer's profile page (and hence the entire account) disappears, and is replaced with the 'Sorry...' message. Not just the individual posts. An account being removed implies an actual human with access to the behind-the-scenes workings is on the ball and handling things, much more so than users clicking the 'mark as spam' button.

Maybe both.

But this is why on many forums you cannot post links before you have posted, say, 10 posts.
Even 5 would work, I think.
