dave's entry 2nd scratch made light contest (hand made)

It’s tinkering timer again, yeah! 8)

My build will be centered around that this time:

Well, actually make it 8 cells. I somehow misplaced one battery case, hate when that happens . . . :~
I really like NiMH AAs and think they get way less fun and attention than they deserve. :stuck_out_tongue:
Most of the parts I want to experiment with are on their way or not even ordered, so I have no absolute clear idea what I want to build.
But I am quite sure it will be box-shaped again (yeah, very creative, I know :P) and probably use 2…3 XM-Ls or one MT-G2 or an combination of those. I have a couple of reflectors, TIR-lenses and a nice aspheric lense I want to test and will decide what to use while building.
Apart from the batteries and their high current capable battery holder, the heatsink will be the formative part of the build.
So I need to get my copper first and build those parts. After that, I can build the housing around that. I think I’ll go with brass again, that stuff was ok to work with even with really primitive tools.
I will try to make it a little less ugly than last time, but I better won’t promise anything. :stuck_out_tongue:

Update, 26th April

Oh well, most of the tools and parts are packed up in boxes now and will move into storage for an unknown time.
I have to move to a new city to start a new job, so I guess you won’t see much progress here in the next weeks.
I really hope that I can use the last weeks of the contest to build my light. Depends a little on the apartment marked, wish me luck.

What is that? Looks like a kindle case or something.

Eneloops are still my favorite battery.

That’s just my notebook where I sketch in my ideas on my long and boring train rides. (Not the electronic notebook kind, just nice paper ;-))
In this case, used as a stopper so all those little eneloops won’t run away while taking the picture.
Yes, they are nice batteries and still offer a reasonable energy density and performance I tink.

wish you luck :stuck_out_tongue:

Good luck on the move. Unfortunate timing but what can you do.

Any luck on apartment hunting?

Strange, I didn’t get a notification for new posts, saw them by chance. ‘scratches head’

Thank you two!

Actually, no, I am still commuting ~4h/day which really leaves not to much time (or motivation, to be honest) to actually do anything. Stuff is packed in the case I find something I can have on the spot. I applied for some apartments that are free in August, though.
On the upside, that little book got filled with some ideas.

Yeah, timing is really unfortunate, but I got a job I actually really enjoy. That will be worth it in the long run.
I’ll try to build most of the electronic stuff on the next weekends. Maybe I can find a place to do the metal stuff, then.

Well, that was a long time since my last post, longer than I thought it would be.
Just crazy how the time runs! On the upside, I finally got a place. It is even big enough for a nice working/tinkering room :

So I hope I can build my light soon after all and finally can do all the stuff on my projects list.
I might even get real wired internet tomorrow, yeah!
I’m sorry, but that might lead to me hanging around here more often again. :stuck_out_tongue:

David

Congrats!

We expect more output from you going forward. Don't let us down.

I have some popcorn set aside just for this one.

Thank you, guys!

I got some more of my boxes this weekend, one with most of my parts in it.
Isn’t it just beautiful what I found while sorting?

I wish I had an actual camera to take a decent picture.
I had always a thing for ceramic packages, but this thing with it’s gold on white ceramic, stunningly beautiful! (Yeah, I’m weird. )
I’ll try to use it as the ‘floody part’ (there is going to be a ‘throwy part’, too ), maybe with an aspheric lens directly on top.
That 2000lm CRI90+ 5000k of light should be more than enough for the form factor I aspire.
Maybe I can get a testing driver build over the next week if work allows for freetime.

Interesting. Looking forward to hearing how that emitter works for you.

Well it’s Vf of ~36V doesn’t make it the first choice for small mobile stuff. I bought if for home lighting. If it performs good I’ll order some of the 4000lm version. The beam pattern of the emitter + aspheric lens won’t be for everyone, either. But I actually like it on other emitters, why not with this one.
The nice thing is that with it’s large emitter surface, it achieves ~ 90lm/W at 2000lm or ~ 110lm/W at 1100lm (and even ~150lm/W at 650lm). Not bad at CRI90 if one can live with it’s floody nature.

What emitter is that?

That is a Nichia COB: NSBWL066A sm503 R90

Ah, high Vf. I bet it will put out a beautiful even emission and tint for in home lighting.
