Interesting Rayovac vintage LED flashlight at Wally world

So I was doing some shopping and browsed the flashlight section of Wally world and came across this interesting piece for under $5! I didn't get it right away because I had to really think about it, lol. I may get it next time I go there and mod it. Sure, it may not be a real vintage Rayovac, but it's still a nice piece to add to the collection!

the light of my childhood

I remember using one of these around the farm. Light starts flickering/getting dim? Smack it on the nearest solid object and you’re good to go.

I got one about a month ago, it will work with a 14500 and a dummy cell using the D-cell converters. Pretty good output just from the alkaleak cells as well but much lighter with the 14500 deal.

Thanks,
Keith

Very similar to the mid 60’s Sportsman models.
Here’s a real 3 D cell vintage Rayovac Sportsman.
What’s old is new, I guess.

Interesting find. Any change you have an sku or similar number. I’d like to see if I can find it near me.
Thanks

If you decide to buy one, be sure to install batteries in the store & test it before you commit actual money. Just sayin…

It is pretty, though, and cheaper than buying an actual classic & modding it.
EDIT: Or NOT, depending on how far you’re willing to go…
EDIT AGAIN: Dang! I need to shut up! And go get a steampunk classic to mod!!! THANKS AGAIN!

While you’re testing it, be sure to see if it even can be modded. If the clerk complains, just take it straight to the Returns Desk, to save the gas of bringing it back from home.

Oh, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t insist:

PLEASE come back and report what you find?

That’s where BLF gets its secret superpower…

Yep, I scanned the barcode with an app and saved it. Unfortunately, nothing turns up.

UPC: 0012800520787

No problem, I'll report what I find when I buy it!

Yeah, but there’s no school like the old school! Nice site!
EDIT: OMG, where have you been all my life?

Thanks for the barcode. I was able to search warmart site to find it. Link

And yes thanks for the advice, I’ll open it and make sure it works before I leave the store. For $5 it might be a neat light to play around and start modding.

Ah cool! It doesn't show up anywhere else except on the walmart site. All I get is product of spectrum brands, inc. I'm really tempted into getting one tomorrow.

First saw a link to it ten years ago on CPF. Spent many hours combing through all of it going “Wow, I remember that one!”
My very first flashlight (early 60’s) is listed on that site. It is a great historical reference for Flashaholics.

Or you could resurrect a real classic… I edited my posts with some drool-worthy ones in the same general price range…

I’m having visions of some friend or other picking one up, whacking it on their hand “like we used to”, then pointing it at their face “like we used to” and turning it on… With a driven XM-L in it… And then their head explodes!

Sorry, not trying to slew the thread off-topic, just stunned, literally, at that Flashlight Museum site!!!

I acquired this 5 cell Sportsman model last year.

Edit—The photo is taken from the flashlight museum site, sorry about not mentioning that LumenHound, but mine is in pretty good shape also.

Sounds like a very early 80’s David Cronenburg horror sci-fi flick.

A link to that site should be a sticky. It provides historical reference.

That’s a beauty! Looks mint.

Not a problem! I've been looking at vintage lights on eBay for a while and some are pretty cheap, just a little TLC and its a keeper! I just thought it was really cool they revived a classic light. Some antique builds would definitely be awesome to see like the one oldlumens did.

Nice find!. I plan on going to my local Walmart tomorrow and see if I can pick one up.

There was a gentleman from an Indian flashlight manufacturer who posted here a while ago. His lights looked very similar. I wonder if these are the same lights.

Incan Eveready with the black cat… postage was killer though. Smelled of scam to me, might not be but the insistence on using expensive couriers was insane. It was near enough $100 postage. Unless he was thinking only about selling a box of 24 or something.

But yeah, they were cool.

I picked up a cheap made in the usa version of one of these at the thrift store for a quarter except it's a 2D . I have a real sportsman 2C that was my grandmothers in mint shape somewhere around here too . honestly the lights look like a real pain to mod ...not like it couldn't be done ...just a serious pain and abit expensive to do it right .... i think the switch has me a bit befuddled .. maybe the answer is a tiny micro switch under the momentary small button .Deep reflector like a HD2010?? or a triple tir ?? or just diffuser material across a the front .?? The 2D light is in very nice condition but has just a funky piece of dirty plastic / thin / warped /scratched to hell plastic lens and over all is light as hell . the threads on the head are embarrassingly lame and if you over tighten it jumps quickly .. like you could almost pull the head off past the threads.

As far as being made in the USA it's a sad commentary or mans manufacturing of crap .

For 5$ i assume the walmart version is just as bad . If you're gonna do it grab a used one off ebay i've seen new in the box sportsman rayovac 2 C's go pretty cheap ...like 20$..

This 2D has the look ...But needs to adorn only a back shelf position /or maybe a quicky 2$ 119 nichia mod .
