I’ve been invited on a night fishing trip tonight with my fishing buddy and was thinking how to convert my cheap crappy headtorch to red in order to preserve my night vision.

I tried bits of plastic, sweet (candy) wrappers and even contemplated borrowing the girlfriend’s nail varnish. However, I wasn’t happy with any of the results and the nail varnish wouldn’t have been easily reversible.

Just when I was going to give up, I remembered that when I got my AA Maglite Mini there was a couple of filters in the pack.

They were around the same size and I could always cut them down if too big. Just hoped they weren’t too small :~

I finally dug them out and tried the red filter.

Ok, next step,is replacing the emitter with a red xpe2

I use an xtar H1 (AA version) because it’s one of the few lights I found that has a red mode that can be turned on and off without messing with the white light. And it’s blazingly bright with a 14500 cell in it!
I use it for astronomy.

Just my 2¢ for anybody who sees this thread. Awesome mod on your part though! It’s great when things come together like that, lol.
