Jessica,
For a lot of us here, flashlights are hobby material, but perhaps we should also examine them as tools. And when selecting a tool, we have to figure out what we want it to do. For instance, I live in the country, so I want a light that throws as far as possible. I work in a factory setting, so I also need a small light that isn't blindingly bright. This is where multiple modes become useful. Since I sometimes travel, I need a car light. I don't have to sacrifice battery life to achieve the smallest light possible; how long it can run is more important. Can you fix your own lights? If not, do you intend to learn? These questions will determine the quality of light that you need. What do you want lights to do for you?
