Where is the best place to get new 18650 batts?

Hey is there a list for the best budget places to get some new batteries?

This seems a bit steep.

You’ve linked to one of the best, the other “best” that I’ve dealt with is www.illumn.com, formerly IS - Illumination Supply. You’ll find similarly high prices with all state-side sellers of reputable batteries.

That is not high, that is cheap, those have the Seiko protection circuit, not the cheaper Chinese circuit. Those batteries are shorter and will fit in many more lights.

For that particular model, that's a good price. Perhaps you want a battery with cheaper or no protection, or a battery with a different cell inside. The sale forum here has batteries from less than a dollar each to around $4, but they're unprotected, and some of them have been used and of unknown quality.

Herehttps://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/22440 when thwy are in stock are tne best price of stateside dealers ans quick ddelivery

That's who he's saying is too expensive.

If you don’t mind waiting:

Mtn Electronics

what light they for?

Seems reasonable to me, too. I haven’t researched lithium cell prices lately, but if you think about what you’re getting, $10 for a high quality and high capacity cell with the best protection circuit around, it sounds like a good deal to me. But, if you don’t need protection, it isn’t hard to find a lower price. If you need multiple cells, your cheapest way to get them may be to buy a “new” old stock laptop battery on sale somewhere. But, try to get a quality brand laptop battery if you want decent cells.

Edit: Here is a Genuine HP 6-cell laptop battery for less than $8.00!

Edit again: Oops! That was a used one. Try this new HP 4-cell for around $16.00!

The trouble with buying Laptop batteries for disassembly is that you do not know what you are getting till you open it up and then have to remove solder tabs, smooth ends and still end up with flat top medium capacity unprotected batteries. The battery the OP linked to is a top end near maximum capacity protected button top cell, IMO not comparable directly with laptop battery pack pulls. Some lights require true button top batteries and solder blob topped pack pulls will not work.

The two US sellers linked to above, Mountain Electronics and Illumn.com, are IMO hard to beat for battery quality and price from USA sellers. You might beat the price from Chinese sellers but with the post office shipping hassles at the moment could end up with them being shipped by surface mail and taking up to 3 months to arrive, if they arrive at all!

Roberrt777,

Your purpose and intended usage is as important as the batteries.

Everybody is correct that those batteries at Illumination and Mtn are priced very well and comparable to what we can order overseas. For them it is a necessary evil where they have to order large quantities for decent pricing but get minimal markup due to the competition. Even if at $1-$2 more than the overseas vendors it is still a decent value because of shipping time.

With that said, to my knowledge (which truly is minimal) those Panasonic 3400 batteries are of the strongest you can buy. Those that you referenced even have "protection". That makes them of the more "expensive" batteries that you can buy but they are not expensive when comparing batteries (apples to apples).

When I first went on the hunt to purchase a replacement light I purchased a Fenix PD35 and two of the unprotected Panasonic 3400's. I paid almost the same money for the unprotected as the protected for not knowing. I didn't know anything. I needed the best for my purpose at work. A quality light with a strong battery.

Then that damned flashlight bug bit me! I started to have difficulty with battery pricing. It was hard for me to fathom often spending almost as much on batteries as some lights. I then realized that it was truly irrelevant. My lights needed to fit certain criteria and the batteries too. All my lights must have reverse polarity and low voltage protection. My usual and relied upon batteries must have 3400mah. "I" do not need the protection.

So here is what I did. I have my 5 Panasonic 3400's and even a couple Sanyo 2600's (to try them out). I then wanted more batteries just for quantity but yet still decent. So I took a chance and purchased some laptop batteries from Joe in this thread https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/28137. They were cheap, and 18 less than the cost of 2 batteries. The batteries ended up being Sanyo 2600's and Sony 2600's. My crude testing showed that they do hold a charge very well and that their capacity is very near new.

Now when people see my new crazy hobby and want to get awed by these crazy bright lights, I have a bunch of batteries. I also have several "emergency spares". That is what I did for me. For others, gifts, etc. they get the protected batteries.

Here is an FYI...Plain Sanyo 2600 batteries to work in Nitecore lights (any many others) that are stated to require button top protected batteries. In other words that fit practically everything :)

Absolutely, you’re right. I was trying to help the OP find a balance between price and performance. The cells found in name brand laptop batteries are likely to be at least mid-grade quality and performance, for often cheaper than what the same cells could be bought for individually. And often, very high quality cells are found, because battery life is often the “weakest link” in the laptop, so the OEM’s want the battery to be as good as it can be. If protection is needed, then laptop cells are not an option, unless the OP is a DIY’er and wants to install the protection circuit. But the OP question was about finding cheaper batteries. The link happened to be high-quality, high-capacity, protected Panasonics, the pricey end of the spectrum. But I don’t really know what the OP needs.

David;

Most of the pack batteries I have heard of from name brand packs have been good quality but limited capacity, in the 2000 to 2600 mAh capacity range. Unless you are an experienced Lithium Ion battery user I am not sure that messing with pack disassembly is a good idea, though I could be mistaken. Inadvertently short something or damage a cell during opening could cause a user unfriendly incident. Lithium Ion batteries are high energy devices and ALL pack batteries are individually unprotected so far as I know. A lot of members, based on posts, want nothing to do with unprotected batteries.

Not as bad as when the family lived in the Philippines in the 1950s. Locals would still find bombs from WWII and occasionally blow themselves, and neighbors, up while trying to open them to get the explosives out. Reports made the local papers regularly of the usually fatal results.

If you decide you want to get some laptop pulls let me know. I am still doing the giveaway for a free pack. You should do some reading and planing as you will need to pull them and test them. If you want more then one pack that is fine too, I am selling them at a cheap rate, 0.25$, per cell. Also try to include a free pack in every order if the box will hold it :). Just keep in mind you do have to do some testing and work opening them for such a low cost. I have yet to have anyone that purchased these say that any were not good for what they are used and untested cells.

The last set work well for a while. Now my Thurnite TN12 (2012) gives me a low battery signal often. The other light I have is a 1300LM C8 from TMALLS. I just hope I receive them by the 27’th of September.
