Paypal increases protection window to 180 days

I learned about this from an LPF post here: Paypal Updates | Laser Pointer Forums - Discuss Laser Pointers | High Power Lasers

In a nutshell, here are the major changes:

Paypal link: Policy Updates

180days = 6months, knowing some people like in the video I recently posted I imagine all kind of negative things done by the buyers now. I mean 6 months is enough to end a marriage these days :) ( I mean enough time to build negative feelings towards something you had the most positive feelings in the first place)

This is good for those of us forced to use surface mail to import cells.

I think that's better for sellers than for buyers. As a buyer, the 45 day limit meant I was getting my product or money back within the 45 days plus the time for the claim. Now it's 180 days? That's good for sellers that are victims of poor shipping services.

“Just wait another two months!” (I haven’t posted it yet :P)

This is a good news.Unfortunately too late for me,after lost 250$ because of their carelessness.
They update their policy relatively frequently, but still not translated on all languages.

I agree that this change is better for the sellers. This means they have way more time to deliver orders before we (buyers) can start a dispute.

You could also take it like that, "we'll refund after 90days of product not being received"
But most likely is it going to be like the buyer receives the product, does not like it (like in the video posted in the off-topic chatter) and will make a Paypal claim that it is unsuitable for him. Actually there is thread right now where a person what's to do a Paypal claim because got a flashlight where lumen rating is not real. When you combine that with a long shipping time, decision for claim is much easier to take .

Sellers define the estimated delivery time for their products. So if the delivery time has been long gone, you can file the dispute. No need to wait for 179 days to do it

Too bad.

That new policy is good for the sellers…

It surely good for the sellers, but I can’t see why should it be bad for the buyer. They didn’t increase the minimum limit to open a dispute. Now I can choose between getting a refund or a resend from a seller without loosing PP protection.

Unless they define the estimated delivery time as 179 days or leave an open ended delivery date. It's super easy for them to push past 45 days now. I hope you enjoyed those long delivery times from Dealextreme in 2007.

That’s exactly the first thing that popped in my head.

From my POV as a custom modder / builder this is bad for BOTH the buyers and sellers. Resons why its bad for buyers covered above, as to why its bad for custom sellers; a lot of us have almost no margin so if I were to loose a claim for a $200 light I would be absolutely devistated.

Let’s say as I’m designing a light I post the initial spec’s in a thread and then it takes me 4months to get this light produced and ready for sale and as I get closer I post more accurate (which exactly match how the light end’s up but that differs from that original post significantly), meanwhile I’ve forgotten about the very first initial announcement of this new custom light (made before I even had the first proto) and the spec’s listed there are quite a bit different from the final unit. This now gives the buyer a SNAD claim (which it couldn’t before since custom built items didn’t used to be covered).

I think its pretty obvious I’m not out to pull one over on anyone, I would hope that’s obvious anyway, but these new rules give buyers to much power over us customizers, so much so I may actually have to reconsider my individually customized options, instead just selling a single version of each different light.

I can see MtnE also being very susceptible to this with his ever changing “mod options”. Someone could buy a light and 6 months later when the current advertised “mod option 3” has had a major overhaul / increased performance someone could file a SNAD claim on that.

I think the change is mostly for kickstarter kind of sellers. Yes, as a modder you're going to have to be more careful, but you could have been burned by the old 45 day limit anyway. The difference is that you probably wouldn't have shipped out the product yet. You may be able to get around that by issuing a refund when you're ready to ship and having buyers immediately pay again with a notice of the final configuration.

I can think of several cases of damaged/DOA where a longer period would allow resend rather than feeling forced to choose refund (and subsequently buying again).

It’s good for buyers & sellers!

But… for me…

Still 45 days window

Custom one-off products didn’t use to be covered so we were safe from false claims, they now are.

As with absolutely every topic out there there are actually forums for small businesses (I’m not a member at any of them but I google search them for help/idea’s). Check out some of the horror stories about falsely (or even maliciously filed) PayPal claims and how poorly PayPal treats us legit sellers that do everything right because they favor the buyers.

BAD 90% of my order exceeding 45 days shipping will not arrive.
