If the Power supply I ordered is as efficient and impressive as the Ebay dealer and USPS, I will be very happy!

I ordered it Friday night. It is coming from Oregon and I live in Pennsylvania[Subs. of Philly]. It is “OUT FOR DELIVERY”!

The USPS gets ripped a lot..I have done my share. I will give them credit for this. They may NOT deliver on Sundays but the packages are still moving!

I am going to do several “Charge/Tests which is where it failed. That was minute or Two into The charge phase AFTER discharge was complete.

I will report back possibly tonight and hopefully w/ all good news!

A liar will eventually get entangled in their own web. The satisfaction of that alone is all the revenge one needs.

For some reason Items I purchase from Washington/Oregon area get to me faster than from anywhere else
I forgot to mention the other night—I usually charge my cells first —let them rest—then I do a charge test—the charger tops them off first before the discharge as normal—I don’t like charging for 2 hours then discharging for another 2 + hours and again charging for 2+ more hours—seems abusive to me

That is good info then, as it is a totally different scenario than what Wolddog is describing. And my charger does the exact same thing his does.

Even California[Illumns] will get here in 2 days for First class mail!

I agree, that is exactly what I did as I wait for delivery. Otherwise the CHARGE/TEST can take 8 to 10 hours!

The only time I don’t do that is for a First time capacity test with new batteries where I let the Opus do the whole cycle. The New batteries are usually ~ 3.60 when I get them.

I could be wrong, but I think you are somewhat misunderstanding what Chops is saying. Maybe a little more abuse, but I take it as time saving.

MINE FAILED when I put the batteries in at a mostly charged state and then the Opus discharged, then tried to charge them @ 1amp but reset instead!

INSTEAD of Charging/discharging and charging for the CHARGE/TEST. It save s time if the batteries are mostly charged or at rest after charging then put them in for Charge/Test. that way you save ~ 3 hours.

The Opus is still discharging and charging so you can get the capacity. My failures have been shortly after discharge when the batteries are @ 2.80v and they begin charging again.I believe the INITIAL charge has nothing to do with failure shortly after the battery is discharged.

Again, where mine failed is what HKJ talked about where the charger spikes in output because it needs that surge of energy when the batteries are ALL @ 2.80v. I think he said it jumps to ~ 6 amps for 0.03 of a second!! He elaborated on that last Friday. Smile

EDIT: Besides ALL of that the Opus should be able to do ALL Three stages without an issue!

Jon from Liionwholesale who sold it to me has about 5 of them running constantly doing capacity tests!

OK, I did misunderstand how you were doing it. I thought you were letting the OPUS do the whole thing….. CHARGING almost empty cells – then DISCHARGING for Capacity – then going back into CHARGE Mode (where the problem occurred shortly after)

My bad, I’ve got it now. You and chops728 are on the same “program”. It is me that is different as most of the time I did it as described above.

Soooooo…… that tells me that part has nothing to do with the problem…… Thumbs Up

I also need to say!!! That I have done it both ways[no wise cracks I LOVE woman!].

I already mentioned that when I get Brand new batteries I make sure the Opus charges it from the beginning. Older batteries for the FIRST test I may have them charged, but no more than 4.10v so the opus can top it off to where it is accurate for ALL batteries and ALL capacity tests in the Opus.

However, the recent failures the batteries have all been mostly charged and then the Opus tops it off, goes to discharge and then charge.

Off Topic!

The mail use to come b/w 1 and 2pm,now after about 3 or 4 mailman changes over the years, It comes b/w 3 and 5! A Flashaholics nightmare! Facepalm

I wanted to get this test done b/4 8 pm when I go on my nightly hike w/ Capo. Does not look like that will happen as it takes about 4 hours,it will take 1 hour just to top the batteries off!

Arrival from California is a whole different deal—sometimes twice as long to get to the Swamps

Plus they are shipping it FedX and they do not deliver Monday. A label has been created,,,that is it.

Illumn must be an exception……but then again they ship it First Class US Mail not FedX.

First test was a SUCCESS! Thumbs Up

Transition from discharge to charge was smooth and NO reset!

I am going to do a few more 4 X 18650 3400mAh tests @1Amp for complete verification, satisfaction and enjoyment!!!

Do the fans wear out quickly? Where did you get them?

I saw a video a month or so of a guy replacing one,,,,,,,,,,looks kind of easy, even for a guy like me!

EDIT: I should have researched b/4 I ask questions!! I will guess you get them at Fasttech! ~$2/each.

I think I found them at Bangood—Nothing to changing them at all—lately I prop up the fan end on something to give better air flow from underneath

Great. That confirms my initial hunch – that it was due to a power supply overload (also surmised by HKJ a day later).

Which SMPS fixed it? Based on your mention of Oregon, it looks like it may be the Supernight in the eBay auction I linked. If that seems to work well then it might be helpful to post a photo of the label, to help others locate it.

I can get a picture after test #2 is complete.

That was an auction (click on “see other items” to fnd it auctioned again at the same price).

However, I’d recommend waiting till we get more feedback. You never know what the quality will be with these bargain-basement SMPS.

OK, thanks for that info. That may be a good idea too about waiting a bit. Thumbs Up

I ordered Two different Power Supplies just in case for back up. One Friday night,,,that will not be here until Saturday!Of course the Supernight which arrived in 2 days!

Durability and longevity is yet to be determined,so far so good on day #2! I expect my Third test result to follow suit. That should be done by early evening b/4 CAPO and I go on our hike.

There is another way to look at getting one NOW. If your doing a lot of capacity tests the worst that can happen is you lose $6.99 if it fails! On the other hand you can let Wolfdog be the Guinea Pig and see how durable and reliable it is. Then again, I may only run One or Two more CHARGE/TESTS in the next few months!

Confused?! YOU MAKE THE CALL! Facepalm

Below are some better choices on eBay for a more powerful SMPS for the BT-C3100. They are probably all much better quality than the SuperNight. I can’t be sure that they are all 5.5×2.1mm barrel (they may be 2.5) but they should still fit (at worst you’d need to buy a cheap adapter or DIY convert). There are multiple quantities for all so there’s no rush (best to wait till we are 100% sure this solves the problem).

$8 12V/5A Asian Power Devices APD DA-60L12

$9 12V/4.16A HIPRO HP-A0502R3D 50W (not 60W) but should be enough.

$10.29/BO 12V/5A Channel Well PAA060F

Generally, in this case, a used high-quality SMPS is far better than a new low-quality one. You can probably find them new for slightly more if you want to be ultra-conservative. But I don’t recall hearing about many failures or problems with those brands (whereas one often hears about failure of the generics).
