vgl hp-617 review

store retail price can go as low as 3.5$
and go as high as 6$.(got one for 3.5:money_mouth_face:

set includes this fake 18650 3800mah cell
( rated at 800mah) and charger adapter

the flashlight also acts as a charging device
for the 18650 battery. the charger is rated
at 4.2 v so no special circuit required inside
the light.

Upon reading the voltage output, it is
higher than the specified 4.2v rating(gulp)

the charger has a green indicator to show
full charge. battery voltage is exactly 4.2v.
still have to verify if charger cuts of at green
light or continues charging ( would be ok
if charger outputs less than 4.2v)

the light uses an xpe-r3 led and a combination of orange peel, shiny
reflector.

beamshots:

due to iphone with no manual settings, I
really cant quantify the brightness of
the light. you can see 3 rings on the
beam due to dual reflector design. when
you focus the beam further, the middle ring
is not noticeable.

if you compare the high and low beams, they
do look the same in the pic but the low beam has visible pwm.

since i have no sphere and lux meter, i can
only give you tail cap measurements. you
can base the lumens on that value.

i have no runtime graph though, can you
recommend a method to measure runtime?

overall, this flashlight is of great value but
the high charging voltage might make it
a potential pipebomb. do you have any recommendations on modding this charger
to give lower voltage?

thats all folks, thank you!

how come the images dont show up? does tapatalk
image hosting work here?

Try imgur or other host. This forum sadly does not support tapatalk as far as I know.

Is this how to link images?

added spaces in the link since it disappears when i post ot

There is a toolbar above the space where you write when you post. Press the “insert image” shortcut then insert the URL there.

yeah! it works! thanks man

question answered, its a bad review. ahahahahaha!

Thanks for the review, and welcome to BLF!

Welcome to the forum breinrules.

Thank you for the review and breakdown shots. Good info. Especially about the safety cut off issue with charging.

Not many members even attempt to create reviews at all. So good on you. :)

I don't know how to mod that charger, but you can build a reliable one for little money using the board that is featured in this thread. It's available from several vendors. I think Fasttech sells them for like a buck something each.

Hi, Brein.

Thanks for the breakdown. These very budget toys can sometimes be mighty useful to non-flashaholics and one never knows when or where they will come in handy.

Welcome to BLF!

You probably already have seen it, but here is charger build using that board I mentioned above.

Welcome to the BLF.

I hope you have fun here. I do!

And nice review. I second what ImA said! Well done.

thanks, I actually have 4 of these and output
voltage range from 4.17v to 4.32v. I still have
to find out what part causes the voltage variation.

neat build, but the board seems similar to
a board from a powerbank, do you think
they have the same function? or is this more
superior in function and accuracy?

Thanks for the review! Those Iphone pictures are great, the colours add a cosy seventies feeling to the review :-)

It really looks like that charger is going to charge up to 4.33V :-(

I guess so, i still have to open the charger to
know how the indicator turns from red to green.
there must be some ic inside

I have a similar charger that came with a headlight with a charger port that was directly connected to the batteries, so I am curious about your findings!

The battery this flashlight comes has a built in Protection Circuit Module (PCM) that allows it to be charged directly from the included PSU or 5v USB charge cable, the battery will say if it has overcharge and discharge protection in small print on the side of the pattery.
Personally I still charge mine in a dedicated charger

I can’t believe these are selling as low as $3,I paid $20 for mine from a shop when I was having car trouble, sucks
