Supbeam X40 /K40 different enough to own both?

Maybe this borders on a newbie question but I ask in any case :quest:

Is the Supbeam K40 so different from the X40 that I should own both?

I do have an X40vn - modified from stock by Vinh54 (CPF fame) that is a near perfect light for me. I love the UI - a click on/off with a control ring for selecting the variable brightness. It is mostly a flodder which is great for living in the woods like I do. Would rather not see the petals from the 3LEDs but they are really not an issue except in close up lighting.

The K40, with a single LED is more of a thrower right? Is it different enough from the quality of light and distance of throw compared to the X40. Same UI which to me is a great thing but otherwise

Other than the K40 out there that would be better throwers in the near same price range.

Thanks for your input.

Yes, the K40 is a thrower. Quite a good one too. Rated at 816m.

Depends how much throw you want. When I use my Maxtoch 2X with a rated 700m throw. I can barely make out what the light is hitting beyond 300 to 350ish metres? lol

I would rather get the K40M over the K40. Still a good thrower at 509m with a beautiful tint (MT-G2). Same UI as the K40 and X40.
If you don’t care too much about tint just stick with the X40.

If you want a thrower K40 is a good option for you because of the the same UI.
Thrunite TN31 is a thrower with the same UI as the Acebeam/Supbeams.

Other good throwers with similar style off the top of my head in the similar price range are;
Niwalker Black Vostro BK-FA01 - similar shape to the rest. With good heatsinking that you can run turbo non stop without overheating the light.
Solarforce S1100

There are heaps others that I can’t think of right now LOL

Will have to look in to some of these others. I like the idea of being able to run on turbo non stop - or at least as long as I choose before a step down.

You are right that more throw isn’t necessarily a good thing if it lights up beyond what you can see anyway. Don’t need to be lighting passing satellites.

Thanks for the info Box.

lol you’re welcome mate. Let me know which light you end up getting

If you are comparing K40M with X40 then I think both of them are quite close in lumens output and throw, except that K40M has better tint.

Lots of info on the lights in my comparison thread. It covers numbers, beamshots, and who is brighter at what battery state among other things..

I have not written much about my subjective "long term" owner thoughts, but ill probably get to it. In short I prefer the K40M and think its the better value light for any flashoholic who have an 18650 charger. If you have an X40 and like the tint and dont need a super smooth beam, no need to buy the K40M. X40 have several advantages too (size, step-less dimming, battery light, built in charger, throw when freshly charged, you feel where high mode is, etc). When it comes to it, which is better is subjective, there are small advantages that goes in favor to each light.

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies.

After I wrote the question this AM I spent more time on the forum and discovered the ongoing Groupbuy of the outgoing Supbeam X60. Once I found out the price it seemed like a no brainer - so I joined the buyers club. Think I’ll get the similarities I like and the difference I was looking for between these 2 lights.

Agree?

No. :D (sorry, but you asked. Maybe Im misunderstanding the question though)

Looking away from price, the main reason for buying the K40M over X40 are tint, better CRI and a more even smooth beam. None of which are "features" the X60 have...

X60 is X40`s big brother with similar features but more of everything.. More output, more range, more spill, more size, more batteries more weight, etc.. X60 still have the same UI as the X40, same emitters (low CRI and CW tint) same "uneven" beam. But since you are happy with those, and want more throw, you will probably be very happy with the X60. You can always get some emitters de-domed if you want even more throw out of it...

Ive got an X60 incoming as well.. 0:)

My X40 is the new shelf queen, now i can use DRY 3x XML my brother give to me 2 years ago

Well if it turns out that I just bought a bigger version of the X40 (buying the X60) with the only appreciable difference being a longer throw making the X40 redundant I guess I’ll have a good excuse to sell the X40vn and play around with something else. That’s how I’ll learn.

Still need to look at your comparison thread Race R86. All the options make my littlesam head spin but worth studying. Thanks for the input.

Box is incorrect about the K40 and X40 having the same UI. The X40 is continuously variable while the K40 has stepped output. To me the X60 is also not an X40 replacement just from the standpoint of size and weight. The X60 is BIG and the larger the light the more hassle involved in carrying it. I like the compact size of the X40.

Check it out and ask if there is anything. Further down in the thread is a post where I talk a lot about the beam differences as well.

+1 to what Richwouldnt said. The size difference between X40 and X60 are quite, ehm substantial. So one may not replace the other.. Really depends on your preferences. Im personally more into the medium large-ish lights that is possible to fit in large pockets over the really large ones. But I want to compare X60 and RC40, so.... one thing lead to another..

Modified K40M and TK75 R86 edition are currently my favorites, although, I have yet to build "my personal" TK75 R86 edition with emitters and beam customized for me.
