Dog Fight...

Ah, nothing like a post-morning nature walk dog fight to remind you that you're alive! To be covered in blood, to be tripped to the ground and then covered with grass and mud, grappling, with freshly torn pants and kneecaps - getting dragged along - trying to break up two snarling dogs of decent size...it's the kind of thing that speaks to your inner-beast as you have to end up beating your own dog to get it to let go its jaws to release its subdued attacker!

Just got out of the shower and am quite pissed off. Headed back down to the park where it happened. This corny guy ignored the leash law, and this is what happened: I am now a strong proponent of stricter leash laws!

Edit: Can't find him now. I could have pulled the EDC pen and finished the attacking mutt, but my dog had the advantage. I was able to keep my wits quite easily, but it still amazes just how fast a situation can develop--and then escalate since we thought it was over and suddenly wasn't.

My dog and I, after inspection, are not seriously injured. I am just resting now after a quick shower. Whew!

Jesus! I'm glad you and the pooch are ok, Joe! That could have been way worse. You're right about killing the attacking dog and it's owner is quite fortunate you took mercy on it. I have zero tolerance for dogs that can't be trusted and even less for their owners that do stupid sh!t like letting them run unleashed. I don't have a big dog (wire-haired dachshund) but if he ever got attacked while I was walking him on his leash I can assure you the attacking dog would not survive the encounter as I would literally tear it limb from limb. And while my blood lust ran rampant the owner had better not show his face.

Might be time for you to carry that 3C maglite on your walks. Nothing says "knock that crap off" like a Maglite head to the noggin!

Just the night before, I went spotting with the 2X, but the Mags and many other lights are in storage. But yes, I should carry one--that or a cattle prod or bug zapper.

The guy kept saying: "This has never happened. I don't understand." Oh, well I understand: You didn't use a leash! I'm more pissed now than when it happened.

I like to let my dog roam without a leash.

 Least you have all you fingers

Dogs are animals and sometimes not too bright .

yesterday my dog chewed on my lithium -ion batteries i had wrapped in a bag to recycle .obviously the bag still had a food smell on it so it got pulled off a table by the door and chewed on a bit before she realized it wasn't snackish.

let me think ?? how many batteries did I have ??

I can see how a situation like that might get the hackles up, on both of ya! Did you get the guy’s name by chance? Report him, not so much to get him in trouble on this encounter but so there’s record of it happening in case it happens again. Might’ve been a kid that dog grabbed instead of your dog that was up to the challenge.

I think I have to agree with JM, time like that it’s probably a good idea for the owner to disappear for a while or things can get really ugly.

My brother heard a raucus once and came out to find the neighbors Doberman had his Blue Heeler pinned to the ground by the throat. A few more minutes and he’d have lost ol Blue. My bro was a brick mason, grabbed a heavy duty 4’ level and beat the snot out of the Red Dobie. Gave it a concussion and it’s owner was a bit disgrunted over the vet bills to sew the Dobie’s head up. The guy is a local cop. Go figure. His Rottweiler was also out, but not in on the attack. My brother said he was afraid to kill the Dobie because the owner is a cop. Which is why he grabbed a level instead of gun.

It’s a vicious circle though, as my brother often let Blue run around out of the fence and she’d torment the 2 Dobies and Rottweiler next door. When someone left their gate open…well… the inevitable happened.

Out here in the country, we used to always let the dogs run free. But lately it’s just not possible. Too many people around, not like it used to be. I even had to run one of the neighbors dogs off with my vehicle when I caught them taking down a calf. His own cow! Around here, that’s bullet bait. We saw the two dogs tugging on the calf, by the time I got to em they had it down and it was in shock. I only regret not actually running over either of the 2 dogs.

Anyway, glad y’all are ok. Walking sticks also make good companions to a nice light. Just sayin…

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Hopefully this guy learned his lesson just by seeing what his dog is capable of. I swear though sometimes dogs are just like people when it comes to fighting. Most people get along with most people but sometimes you meet someone you just want to beat the hell out of and you don’t even know why. Seems to be the same for dogs. It’s a good reason why dogs need to be on leashes when they are around strange dogs. Same reason why my wife keeps me on a short leash.

I never go walking without some protection, actually a firearm for which I am licensed. Probably the best thing is something like bear spray or other hot OC spray where legal. Dog owners seem to be able to ignore the fact that their dogs are vicious, and get angry if you defend yourself, but I am not about to get mauled if I have to kill their dog. A strong cane with a heavy handle is good.
Jerry

Glad you are OK and there was no serious injuries. I can not blame you one bit for being angry. IRRESPONSIBLE pet owners are what keeps me away from Dog parks now[where they are allowed to roam free] and other parks/public areas where they are not suppose to be running free! !

The only time my Siberian Husky is off a leash is the obvious, which is inside or a secure fenced in area!

Besides the fact that Husky’s have a high prey drive and love to run[sled pulling Dog’s!],IT IS AGAINST THE LAW anywhere to have a dog running loose.

Most of my walks are on hiking trails where some people let there dogs run loose. I can understand that even though it is not allowed! The same thing could still happen on these trails, just less people and less of a chance.

A populated and more public area like one of my walks near a college where some of these people always let their dogs run loose……It is against the law, torture for my dog who sees these dogs running around and can also cause problems like the OP encountered. Plus the fact that some people[other than the dog owners] are afraid of Dogs and don’t want them running up to them, jumping on them ect.

Bottom line is people are going to do what they want. However, there are consequences for that behavior!!

stupid dog owners are everywhere. Glad you’re ok. My buddy got some nasty scars from trying to break up
his relative’s dog attacking his dog.

on my local MTB trails, I see and meet unleashed dogs on every ride and they’re all super cool because they reflect their
owners. But if thugs start hanging out there w/ their dogs then…

Glad to hear ur both ok
In my experience dogs that are off the leash are always the ones that the owner has least control over, their dogs rarely obey a single command (yet the owner believes they are in total control for some reason).
It is rarely the dogs fault - it is the owners responsibility to train their dog - at least to sit, lay down, leave, fetch & come back. Sadly most dogs only learn- ‘give me your paw’ and ‘wee wee’s’ and maybe sit if they are lucky.
I have a Rottweiler and had one previously, neither of them ever bit another dog, or hassled them, rotties tend to stay close to their owners or their family ‘pack’ - but both of mine have been bitten! both by out of control lunatic dogs off the leash that ran halfway across a huge field, with no training, both owned by clueless women with the same ‘I don’t know what happened, he’s never done that before’ implying it is somehow my dogs fault when it was on the leash by my side?
Both my dogs have been soooo soft, and a bit spineless lol. I remember one day I was out with Bella and she was only around 2, a huge great dane (he was only playing apparently) chased her for at 1/2 mile - when the dane gave up she sat there, still around a 1/2 mile away and simply refused to move, when I got there she was shaking with fear lol! Yes, she is a Rottie lol! I was more embarassed then angry!

Good to hear you are both ok Rusty.

Well, there’s your problem, right there! Canis Combatus Interruptus is quite rude, when your own dog is winning the fight.

That’s a good time to get the name & address of the other dog’s owner. If he protesteth too much, ask him since he’s got such control over dogs that he can let his run loose, what command should you use to get yours to let go. If he tries to strike your dog, that’s considered a Legally Justifiable Cause to beat the dog-snot out of him…

IMNERHO, of course…

But (okay, also IMNERHO) all dog owners should try to understand Cesar’s Way! I grew up with a dog pack (up to a dozen or more at any given time) in the yard; & Cesar puts into English, the effective Controls I learned from the calm, confident leader of my family’s pack. If you watch a stable pack of dogs interact while you listen to him, it makes more sense. It works if you work it, for your dog(s) as well as the rogues you meet along the way. Being The Strong Pack Leader brings the other dogs into your pack, and never allowing “Dominance Behavior” prevents fights from starting — so you don’t have to end them. It’s amazing to watch, even more amazing to do. There Are No Bad Dogs!

IMNERHO, as usual, but also In My Experience…

PS: Your dog won the fight. Be sure you reward him! He won’t remember or understand why, by now, of course, but he earned it, fair and square.

WoooHooo! I’m sure he’ll enjoy tearing up the toy as well.
