Today I received the HM Q5 Adjustable Focus LED Flashlight provided in a giveaway by DinoDirect.

SUMMARY

I like it. If I find more at good prices like the ubiquitous SK68 I’ll buy more as gifts. I’ve long been a fan of SK68s and this light is similar in design, function, and performance. But it is lighter and smoother and - to my eye - better looking.

This one is a keeper for me, My always carry backup is an L10 with Eneloop and moon mode for long run time. I’ll probably EDC this as primary for while with a 1450 instead of my typical 18650 light (which will go in the daybag).

PROS

- Performs and is priced very similar to the SK68

- About 15% lighter weight (without cell) than the SK68 - sample is 54g versus the 67g listed

- Comfortable to carry, though slightly longer

- Longer clip seems easier to use (perhaps with less durabilty?)

- Zoom is slide and has the smoothest & best hold of position of many zoom lights I’ve used

- Zoomed out size is about 1/3 wider diameter than my SK68

  • Focused die shape is same size as SK68 - brightness similar

CONS

- Next mode memory

- Tailcap threads were dry and rough

- Probably water resistant and not likely to be waterproof (by immersion)

- Tint of the XPE is cool

  • Slight ring at outer edge of zoomed out beam (my XPE SK68 is much ringier)

DRAW RATES (tail)

- 0.88A High 0.22A Low with 1450

  • 1.50A High 0.40A Low with AA (alkaline)

OTHER

- Pressure fit washer around the LED is polished and cupped, looking somewhat like a shallow reflector

- Shipping took nearly a month. For me 3 to 4 weeks is fairly typical for unregistered mail. Looking at the website, shipping only took 2 weeks, before it was shipped it took just over a week to stock and send.

  • Sent with basic white box and bubblewrap in thinly padded flat mailing envelope. Box was crushed, also common.

EDIT: I got out the pointy needle-nose and partially took it apart (save for lifting led and it’s cover washer.

There is a threaded pill that unscrews from the body. TWO o-rings - one around the side of the pill head which the zoom slides on and another under the pill head that seats when the pill is screwed in. There would be some thermal transfer in the threads plus maybe at the base near the driver where it seats and that’s about it - body does get warm on high.

Driver cavity is 14mm and driver is just under in many places but does manage to press fit. Only 1 spring, at tail.

Pill is not hollow but it is center drilled in addition to the wire holes on each side. Given the design I’m not sure it makes much difference. I can see where using some tricks from P60s the heat-sinking could be improved. For somebody with a bunch of spare parts it might be a fun project.

Possibly more water resistant than some zoom lights. No o-ring where lens and bezel fit together but there is where the bezel threads to zoom head. Since water can seep around lens, primary point of entry to electronics would be around LED board (no sign of paste underneath but I was able to pull out the waste from drilled wire holes) or where wiring drops through unless that is sealed - no sign from underneath.

Did you take it apart enough to say if it’s
— hollow or solid pill, or just a shelf for the emitter to sit on?
— diameter of the driver and whether it looks easy to replace? (hoping it’s the SK68 15mm diameter)
EDIT — that info’s added above, thanks for the edits and for making it easy to find later.

Hm, now I need to compare this to the SK58 — still looking for the ideal moddable AA zoomy

It looks vey similar to this one at Banggood (non aff link) :

I did not but did based on interest, editing OP. It’s so light I wouldn’t try boosting output. and functions seem similar my guess it is the same driver should be easy to replace if you can obtain/sand one to fit. Thin wire as typically seen.

Yes, looks to be pretty much the same design and markings.

Thanks GottaZoom’s nice review!

Thanks for the review, I was curious about this light. So this light works as good as it looks :-)

I took mine apart (not same vendor but same light)

Hollow pill
pencil mod on capacitor works

These are the SK68 in a more sleek wrapper, they work well and aren’t as snaggy/sharp as a SK68

14mm driver

I’d already ordered the BG one for $4.99 yesterday, but

what the heck, I figured I’d try Dino.
So:

I tried the BLFHM code
first it told me it wouldn’t take the code since the discounted price $5.99 was already low

Then it showed me an order page with
Merchandise Subtotal: USD$ 5.99
Coupon Code: BLFHM
Save: USD$ 1.00
Total: USD$ 4.99
Cart Total: USD$ 4.99

So I clicked to pay with PayPal

and PayPal showed an invoice for
Item number: X0001BPFSR
Item price: $5.99

so — watch carefully.

Had this same light in the cart at Tmart over the weekend. Similar light - Ultrafire XPE Q5

The Tmart description is three mode High, Mid, Low no Strobe for $6.94

First, you need log in your registered account on DinoDirect. Then if you use the code BLFHM , PayPal will show that Cart Total: USD$ 4.99.

I did it the way you describe — and just tried again.
Same result:

logged into DD (not into the paypal account login option, the regular DD user login)
clicked the link at the top of this thread for the flashlight
checked the box to use the code on the DD page
ignored the popup on the DD page that says a code can’t be used
entered the code
saw the discount on the DD page
clicked Paypal to check out
saw the price of $5.99 without the discount being applied
quit.

I’ll wait til the other one arrives and see if it has a solid pill.

Hank, I found a work around. Do not click the yellow "checkout with PayPal" button. Instead proceed with the green "secure checkout" button. You *will* still have the option to pay with paypal (and it will now be the correct $4.99 price in paypal).

Did you complete the earlier order from DD? Was $5.99 deducted from your PayPal? If so, you might want to PM Gaby to see if they can refund the $1 for you.

I have double checked. Hank has not paid yet.

Hank, have you saw Halo… resolved the problem?

Do you need one HM Q5 light?

Thank you so much for your clear explanation

Anyone have a side-by-side with an SK68? Really want to need this night.

Not ordering this one right now, not sure yet if I want more than one of these.
Also waiting to see how well they can be modified. I’ll keep watching.

Beautiful looking light.

I love modifying small zoomies and have thought about getting this one. Only problem is the current small zoomies I’ve been working on are all smaller than this one. Not sure this light would compare well to one that is similar in size but uses an 18650, or to my much smaller 14500 zoomies.

I’ve finally found a way to get a reliable connection to ground from a floating 105c driver (floating = the driver doesn’t sit in the pill…. it floats below it) in this kind of light. Previously, I relied on solder braid tabs soldered to the edges of some of the 7135 chips. Pressure from the battery would press these into the pill and connect to ground.

Unfortunately, that method proved unreliable.

My new method involves drilling a small hole through the side of the pill above the threads with a pin vise drill. Then I solder wire to one of the 7135 chips and have the other end go through this hole. A little bead of solder paste on the end of the wire through the hole to try to get a closer connection. Finally, I used conductive silver epoxy on the wire and the hole to cement everything in place.

I was worried that the conductive epoxy would have too much resistance for a main current connection, but I tried it last night with a 3 amp driver, and it works perfectly. Next step will be to go fix my other lights with floating drivers.
