So lets see your Gas Lanterns !

Below are some of the ones in my collection:

As number in the pic, here is are the info on them.

  1. 1. An all Brass Multi-fuel Rivertrail lantern. This classic style will burn Naptha, Gasoline, Kerosene, Diesel, Furnace oil, BioDiesel, Alcohol, etc. a great Apocalypse lantern :stuck_out_tongue:
  1. 2. Coleman Model 335 , Date stamp 1976.
  1. 3. Coleman original Model 200, Date Stamp 1966
  1. 4. Coleman Model Easi-Lite 321B, Date Stamp 1981
  1. 5. Coleman Gas Table Lamp, Model 159, Date Stamp 1942
  1. 6. Coleman Easi-Lite 222A ā€œPeak-1ā€ compact gas lantern, DateStamp 1989
  1. 7. Coleman EasiLite Model 321a , Date Stamp 1979, This lantern is in New original condition, and was never used. ( still have original box)
  1. 8. Coleman Model 22D, dual-Mantle, Date stamp 1949
  1. 9. Otto Bernz Co. ( BernzOmatic) TX-700 Propane Lantern, Date Stamp 1955. I completely restored this very rare vintage lantern, (along with its equally rare sister TX-500 single burner Stove) This Lantern was the first commercially available Portable Propane-powered Lantern, with a very unique design. This lantern still has the original BernzOmatic propane cylinder with the unit. ( i have more photos of the lantern and stove together)

All these lanterns are functional and working great. ( # 4 & 6 i use regularly on camping trips.

Going to be watching this thread. I have a couple of Coleman lanterns around 60 years old. They have a real large reflector on the top and give off a lot of light, much larger than the more recent ones. The plungers seals or what ever you call them are made of leather. Canā€™t remember if I replaced those with newer ones or not. Those were bought by my father when he was young. Have another one I found scuba diving in a lake, maybe 30 years old. Must have found it just after it went swimming because it was still in real good condition.

i like no.6

Most all Colemanā€™s have the date (last two digits of the year) stamped in the bases of lanterns. (underneath the bottom )Its easy to restore & soften most of the leather pump washers on older vintage lanterns and stoves with soaking them in mineral oil.

The small Easi-Lite 222A model ? its a nice compact ā€œbackpackingā€ style gas lamp.
( his is the same one i compared the light output of the Steam Pipe Light to on week-long backcountry Canoe Camping trip here:

Its one of the two gas lanterns i use regularly on camping trips.

is there any place i can still get one of these gas lantern?
never have the gas one but i do have a kerosene lantern

Most outdoor stores still carry the Coleman classic Naptha lantern, or you cna lok on Ebay or the lantern Collectors forums.

Cool thread! I donā€™t have any but will enjoy reading about them. The title of this thread also made me thing of this ad, I hope itā€™s good for a chuckle for those of you who havenā€™t seen it before

Add Primus and Optimus and Radius lanterns for a Swedish touch.

The Rivertrail i have is built by Optimus i believe. Though i been keeping an eye open for Optimus, Primus, and AFC (Ashflash) lanterns.

Or maybe a German Petromax clone from China.

The two older oneā€™s are model 220F, 228F from 66 and 67. The newer one is a model 12 from 86. Both of the older oneā€™s have 220F and 228F stamped on them.

People down here use them for fishing lights at night for catching white perch/crappie. Hang a couple off the side of the boat to attract bait fish and the crappie come to feed. Some people swear by the old fuel lanterns and wonā€™t use propane or 12v lights.

Nice thread subject :-)

Camping gaz made a compact butane lamp classic based on the standard cheap butane/propane disposable tank that is still widely used, but it is not as handsome as the Coleman ones (all Campingaz products are 'ugly but convenient' btw)

my brother has an old vintage CampingGaz i have been trying to acquire for years for my collection. Those were super compact & lightweight for backpack camping. One day. >)

found one of these in the neighbors trash when they moved.what drew me to the pile was a 60ā€ plasma tv.
as i loaded it in the truck i notice this and several other interesting items.like mine
gotta get some mantles to try it with.
who makes good ones?nos is fine as the thorium thing is way overblown.

You should be able to find the Primus mantles at some Outdoor/camping supply stores in your area or even on Ebay. I seen the mantles to fit those at Cabelaā€™s Outdoor store recently.

Awesome photos, thanks for sharing. I only have a Coleman propane lantern which Iā€™ve had about 10 years and itā€™s unused in the box. Someone had given me a fluorescent lantern which I loved, and then at some point I switched to LED lanterns and LED flashlights with diffusers. Those gas lanterns sure look cool though, and I remember using them growing up.

i noticed they are seemingly standard double tie type.
