Going on a mountain hiking trip, what would you bring as a complementary flashlight to your headlamp?

If i'm going into the woods I tend to go to my solarforce masterpiece..3 great modes and 2 18650's..2 hour runtime on high (800 lumens), 8 hrs on medium and 20+ on low..I would back it up with a p60 host though with an xm-l..

In a P60 I myself would go for a XP-G R5 with SMO reflector rather than an XM-L. If I really wanted to take an XM-L I'd probably take my KD C8 with SMO.

Solarforce L2 with 2 spare batteries
Xeno E03 as third (14500 inside + 2AA alkaline for low and long runtime), i do not want to risk running out of light for any malfunction (ok, i'm paranoid ).

I'd bring a small light with a XR-E/XP-E for throw. You have the headlamp for the floody part.

I take a Zebralight H51f, a single AA compact "thrower", and a ITP A3 around the neck and a few extra batteries. Sometimes I'll carry my other H51 as a battery carrier and for redundancy.

Get it all small and light weight however.

My hiking trips tend to be week+, and I don't bring a headlamp. I want small size and long run time. If I were to choose from the lights within easy reach it would likely be my Tank007 Tk-566 with a lithium primary.

Going to the woods - one light is not enough .. Learnt that the hard way ...

If you have more - take more ...

Think of it as having a spare - then a spare spare .. I would call 3 a minimum ...

Maybe a 18650 , then a AA and a AAA light , package ...

Its not just that the light may fail , the battery may fail , you might drop the light or fall and damage it , and any one of a hundred more possibilities .

When we go camping in the woods I bring at least 10-15 flashlights so I can play with all of them. But on an actual hike I always take at least four (five if you count the little keychain LED I have). For example I'll take my Xeno E03, Fenix PD30, I'll take a 500+ lumen thrower, and usually a back-up light that has a long run time should I become stranded for an extended period.

As for what I use, that totally depends on mood. My wife prefers to hike in total darkness and only use lights when necessary. Sometimes I like to use a low-lumen light and other times I carry the thrower to spot all sorts of things. Everyone has a different idea, most importantly just have fun.

Xenon arc battlefield illuminator. Rig it up on a 50' mast in the parking lot to get above the trees, then all you need to do is cobble together GPS + cellphone + software + remote controlled pan/tilt - it will be like your own personal sun, tracking you all the way along.

Seriously though, it depends how long you're going to be gone, and what kind of friends (*cough* sherpas *cough*) you're taking with you. Personally, I'd take two 18650 hosts that can be lego'd, one with an aspheric head, the other plain. I'd also bring a smaller spare, depending on what kind of battery the headlamp takes.

Being slightly paranoid, I'm sure the commonality of parts & batteries would make me more comfortable, and the runtime of 18650 over 14500/AA is worth the weight penalty. Of course, if your friends are at all like you, just bring a headlamp, a handlamp, and a spare battery. anything goes wrong and someone is going to have the necessary spares, or a portable soldering iron, right?

The option that I would bring with me is not on your list. I would have brought a 1xAA xp-g (for efficiency purposes rather then output) torch. It would have a low output somewhere south of 10 lumens. That along with another spare lithium AA, is so small and light, will still comfortably last you for 72hours of continuous use.

Thanks for all replies,

It's really hard deciding but actually I bring at least 4 flashlight with me, one headlamp, 1xAAA light, one spare 1xAA light w/ diffuser that will serve as camp light and one bright light. The dilemma starts there, wanted to go lightweight but also wanted to carry the brightest.

My climbing buddies are not into lights and carry only a generic lead head lamp that approximately 10 lumens and at times I have to bring extras to lend to some without lights. I Just joined a new group and a friend told me that her friend is going to Europe and will be buying a 1000 lumen flashlight which they also might get. The brightest light I usually carry is 400-500 lumens max, now rethinking my set up if it's worth to bring a light bigger than the L2.

Yeah I know I could survive with my 200 lumen headlamp but my reputation is on jeopardy(My friends know I collect flashlights). lol

I just went on a camping trip last weekend. I had with me 7 flashlights for 2 1/2 days lol.

Sounds like you are talking about the beginning of a friendly lumens war. If that is the case, well of course bring your brightest light! You say they are going to buy 1000 lumen lights. If you don't have something to beat that it's time to go shopping! LOL.

The game has changed then! I retract my earlier comment, I thought it was only a simple camp without other flasholics. It is now time for you to go shopping for the big guns. it is time for you to get... The "Torch"

To justify the cost of purchasing this, use the cost per lumen argument

Akoray K106 $12.50 for 230 lumens = $0.0543 per lumen

The "Torch" $150 for 4100 lumens = $0.0366 per lumen

One way or another, he'll end up implementing my plan. It's only a matter of time.

muhahahahaha...

When you're outdoors, I think it's not so much lumens that matters but lux. In open spaces it's often very useful to see farther out. Plus it's a rare opportunity for folks for whom "camping" is a rare opportunity to use their throwers.

What are your friends getting that's 1000 lumens? Need to know the "enemy" lol.

"The Torch" has 5 minute runtime? Not very useful camping, or anyting for that matter.

I actually don't know, just my friend told me that she knows someone getting a 1000 lumen light, I actually don't know anyone or has encountered anybody during a climb with lights brighter than my lights. The last time I encountered someone with brighter light is on Jan 2009 before I became a member of Cpf, my brightest light at that time is a 9 led generic flashlight with approximately 10 lumens. They probably got surefire 50 lumen lights. That made me search for brighter lights and ending in cpf. The search still continues though. lol

You can't push 1000 lumens? ... I don't know why I even bother talking to you. ;)

Seriously though, megalumens (okay, technically kilolumens) is fine in light-dirty environments like cities, but (I can't believe I'm saying this.. god..) it's overkill if everyone is running around with battery-sucking monsters.

Much better than everyone carry long life, reasonable output lights and you carry the big lights "in case of emergencies".

Given the situation, would you bring the like of Trustfire X9 w/ spare battery?

I already have a Zebralight H51, XenoE03, 2xFenix E01, the only missing link is a thrower light.
