Securitylng S3 teardown.

I like simple tube lights. I also like trawling through eBay now and then to see if I can pick up any bargains. I recently put in a bid for a torch that looked promising and won it for £3.50 ($5). I was expecting little more than ‘Ultrafire S5’ quality but was completely gobsmacked when it arrived and I opened it up. I definitely struck gold this time! If this had ‘Convoy S3’ written on the side nobody would bat an eyelid.
I cannot currently find it listed on eBay and the only other sources I have found are Aliexpress and Amazon.
I also can’t find any mention of this torch on BLF so I thought I’d bring it to the attention of the collective with a quick teardown.

Fit and finish are up to Convoy standards.

Tailcap assembly and switch are almost identical to my Convoy S2+.

Glass lens is an impressive 2mm thick.

Check out those threads! Chunky or what.

The aluminium reflector is a custom design that screws onto the brass pill like a P60 dropin. It is very deep at 25mm from front to back.

Again, check out those impressively chunky square cut threads.

Note the very tall plastic collar around the LED - which is XM-L2 U2-1A. Thermal paste under the star.

Reflector is well made and very deep - should be a good thrower! That tall collar must be blocking a lot of light though.

Driver is typical generic 17mm 5 mode with no memory. I will try for some tailcap measurements later but my initial impression is that the LED is somewhat under driven. The driver is the weak link in the specs when compared to a Convoy.

Protected Samsung 26F fits ok but quite tight lengthwise.
Tailcap measurements were High:1.45 / Med:0.7 / Low:0.32 so roughly 100% / 50% / 20%.
A lot of scope for improvement there then.

Beamshot. I’ve decided that both me and my camera suck at beamshots but there seems to be an awful lot going on in that beam. Doesn’t look as bad to my naked eye but still a bit ringy and not a very clearly defined hotspot.

nice design.waiting for driver pics

I love that deep reflector. I might just grab one of these……

Nice find. It seems there are a lot of known designs with Securitylng label out there:
http://www.epathchina.com/led-flashlight-securitying-led-flashlights-c-76_429.html?page=1
One of their suppliers for dive lights should be Brinyte…
Beside the http://www.epathchina.com/securitying-portable-600-lumens-xm-l-t6-led-5-modes-tactical-flashlight-p-8610.html from above I found another similar design:
http://www.epathchina.com/securitying-600-lumens-xm-l-t6-led-3-modes-tactical-flashlight-p-8612.html
(The tailcap resembles the S3 even more)
I was considering to buy the NITEFIGHTER F30B (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2000-Lumens-CREE-XML2-XM-L2-T6-LED-High-Power-Flashlight-Torch-Lamp-5-Mode/32226111917.html).
But there is almost the same light with Securitylng branding:
http://www.epathchina.com/securitying-600lm-xm-l-t6-led-5-modes-ipx-7-waterproof-tactical-flashlight-for-hiking-camping-home-using-p-8741.html
And this one has even the XM-L2 U2-1A.
At their Aliexpress store it still listed as XM-L T6, but on the pictures the XM-L2 is visible.

What do you think: is it the same as the F30B - or even better built?

Done.

subbed also, I love the look of that deep reflector.

thanks for the driver pics ,the driver might be modable ,that r150 with another r150 or r100 might push the current.

Nice find Lancman. Thank you for reporting on it.

I’ve got the UranusFire C802 today (eBay) and it’s exactly the same light. I’ve already disassembled it. Any new thoughts reg. the driver? Should it be replaced or can it be modded for better performance? Although it looks the same mine has next mode memory. A resistor over capacitor mod could cure at least this one…
I’m also thinking about to work on the reflector (lathe) to reduce the cylindrical part above the led (the distance between cone and bottom of the MCPCB). If I cut off this cylinder (and the plastic “tall collar” inside) and adjust the outer cylinder with the threads in height as well as the rest of the bottom (space/cavity for the wires) the LED could be positioned much deeper inside of the reflector. But how to find the best distance/position? Would it be best if the top of the MCPCB is ~ in line with the end of the reflector cone or should there be some small distance so that only the dome of the XML-2 protrudes into the cone? I think the optimum could be found trying different spacers but any hints are welcome.

Strange that your driver is different. I will probably end up changing my driver as I dislike the mode spacing and the low frequency PWM. Apart from the driver I’m really liking this light, especially the build quality.
I would be interested to hear how you get on with altering the reflector. Probably best to do it a bit at a time and see how it affects the beam. Just be careful you don’t run out of thread as the head is not threaded all the way down.

I got the light from the Securiting UK eBay store but it is no longer listed.
There is a link to their Aliexpress store in the first post.

Thanks for the great review. And antenne thanks for the tip on the Uranusfire. I just ordered one. Must check out that reflector - looks like a good thrower for a tube light.

Great find on that light!

Is it 10mm, or 16mm star?

Lancman you managed to get a very good deal there. Good find.

I looked up the UranusFire C802 in ebay and found the one below. The ebay listing below is not a good deal a it comes with a crappy battery and charger. Also price is too high.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Uranusfire-2000LM-CREE-XM-L2-LED-Exquisite-18650-flashlight-Torch-Light-Holster-/311335479939?hash=item487d0a6a83:g:z7MAAOSwNSxVJ0ue

Looks like a great host _

It’s a standard 16mm star / 17mm driver setup.

I did indeed get a good deal and I still very much like it. Just not totally convinced by the reflector design. One day I may get round to trying a Convoy S2 reflector in it for comparison.

It’s available on Aliexpress and at $11 is still good value IMO.

Yes, build quality is very good and it should be easy to mod.
