Mini touch SMD light review (CR123/16340)

Ordered these “Mini touch lights” from BG since I have over 50pcs of unused CR123 with expiration date in 2017.

They are fairly lightweight and well made. Can fit a CR123, 16340 and even 18350 (very snug fit). There is a very sensitive contact area that can be activated with anything that is even a bit conductive.

I didn’t expect them to be very bright since the spec says 100mA with a 16340. But they are actually very dim, I think about 10-15 lumens max. I have one CW and one Warm, the tint is pretty decent and the beam spreads out nicely. They could work well as little night reading lights or for camping.

Unlike the USB powered SMD light, these are not as bright and remain cool during operation. A typical USB SMD light draws over 200mA and gets hot quickly.

Warm (1 feet)

Cool (1 feet)

Took some readings:
-OFF standby draw: 2.5uA
-CR123 3V: 28mA, ~4 Lux 1M
–18350 4.2V: 50mA ~6Lux 1M

According to these numbers, a fresh CR123 can run for about 40 hours. (1,400mAh typical)

Good find, sort of a portable battery powered nightlight for times the power is out… Thanks.

very nice light but i don’t like it bare like that :frowning:

Cheaper at ebay @ USD$2.99

I got it from ebay.

Here is the mod I did for the light. Well, not really to the light but to use different batteries. 1st mod is to use AA x 3.

Parts used:

2 x used AA battery -ve plate. Have to disassemble AA battery to get it.
1 x paper to roll up to the size of CR123
1 x AA x 3 battery holder with switch
Hot Glue.

Finish product (prototype) as below:

Let’s there be light!
Using used batteries.

Now using (charged) rechargeable batteries.

Next mod will be using 18650 battery. Now waiting for 18650 case to arrive.
