Old Halogen worklight to LED

I had this old Halogen worklight with a burned out bulb. I never liked these type of worklights as they run very HOT. to the point of being dangerous. Should they tip over there will be a problem. Also, touch them in the wrong place and you will get burned.

I was in a Home Depot the other day and came across these 2 lights on a clearance bench. Recessed ceiling lights, LED, at $3 each. The regular price was $18. For $3 I thought is was worth a shot at gutting it for a repair (mod) of my blown worklight.

The origianl worklight was a 150W Halogen, the LED will be a “65 Watt” equivalent. Not a world beater I know, just some usable light.
I present this, not as a great mod, but only to show an example of thinking outside the box. I have no use for a recessed ceiling light, when I came across this deal all I saw was useful parts.
The light and driver.

I will put this aside, could be useful for some other project down the road

Lens removed from the light.

A closeup of the LED driver. Seems to have an isolation transformer and an AC to DC power supply, no doubt regulated.

I gutted the worklight of all it’s old hardware and mounted the LED and driver.

No big deal, but this works. And it doesn’t get HOT

Nice mod for 3 bucks and a bit of time.

Welcome to the “Modded Halogen Work light club” :stuck_out_tongue:
Similar to what i did with one i have but i used different SMD LED modules and made this one run from 12 volts DC for use with a Battery Pack or AC adapter. I also mixed warm white and cool white modules to give it a nice neutral tint.

Wow. How hot does that one get?

The glass gets only warm, and the light case stays fairly cool.

Thanks, glad to now be a member

BTW, I was already a member of the “Modded Florescent Work light club”
My $3.96 florescent worklight Mod

That one cost me almost 4 bucks though, but it was worth it as it runs on AC or 12V DC

I’ve been trying find a product like you made without having to build my own. The closest I can find is https://www.superbrightleds.com/cat/landscape-spot-flood/ but I want one brighter and without a battery. Does anything like that exist?

Yeah, these things are getting pretty common. I just picked up a simple 1000 lumen one at Menards for under $20. They also have a (stated) 2000 lumen model for under $50, see here

Inexpensive (and cheaply made) versions can also be found on Amazon. Here’s a popular “30W” one. Note that you’d need to attach a cord or hardwire it.

If you guys followed the Home Depot deal alert thread, you would know that LED work lights were/are being sold for less than $10
These lights have a high quality BridgeLux emitter

“Daylight White, 6000K”. Haha. I like the idea though. I could work with that.

Hmm, I don’t actively watch the HD thread. Good price on that.

And if warm white is more your fancy, they offer the same light in WW:
