Hunter ceiling fan with wireless dimmer. Can I use LED bulbs or not?

I see many that say they are dimmable, but will they work with this kind of dimmer? Can I get a neutral white that will work?

Matt

Link to product? Which type of bulb?
I guess it will work, because most dimmers are simple phase cut and that is what the dim able LED bulbs are made for…

Have you tried any LED bulbs in it? Some bulbs have better dimmer support then others, even amount bulbs that claim to be “dimmable”. I believe cree bulbs (with metal heatsink not the all plastic bulbs) have good dimmer support. Unless you find out what type of dimmer is in your fan it’s hard to say up front what bulbs will work. There are a few different methods of dimming that are used in common dimmers and if you search you can find out what methods a particular bulb is compatible with.

I am using the stock dimmers…

I really hate to throw a good LED in it and have it go up in smoke or damage the dimmer, they are a bear to fit in the light.

It seems that due to lack of information the only way to say for sure is to try it. And the person to try it is mattlward. Maybe it will work, maybe it will blow and burn the house down in the process. The only alternative is to provide very detailed information about the whole setup, then maybe someone can say for sure that it will fail.

I don’t believe the dimmer or the bulb will be damaged if they don’t work for dimming. Appliances can be damaged by dimmers. You might have read a warning like that.

The page you linked does not say what dimmer method it uses. The two common dimmer types are Leading Edge (aka Incandescent, Triac, SCR, Forward Phase control) or Trailing Edge (aka ELV, Reverse Phase Control).
Also have you read the reviews on the page you linked?

Though it seems this “feature” can be disabled and you should be able to use a dimmable LED bulb (as long as it’s compatable)

I have been running into a lack of information on the dimmer. We have a train track near our house and incans don’t last very long and I wanted to save some energy. But, I did not want to melt expensive LED bulbs or fan controls. I have a huge stock of incans and I will continue to use them until I am forced to stop, when I run out of 60 watt bulbs. I do also like the warm white bulbs I have been buying and will continue to use for 1 way and 3 way table lamps.

I may pick up a couple of Cree branded dimmables and test them.

Matt

I don’t quite understand the correlation with train tracks. Are we taking about them being so close that you can reach out the window and touch passing trains, thus the vibrations are killing them or something else?

KuoH

Incandescent filaments don’t appreciate vibrations.

Matt, are you using vibration resistant aka rough service bulbs? They should provide longer life than standard bulbs for you. And by the way, rough service bulbs are still available! They are currently exempt from the ban.

Yes, that is what I generally buy. The tracks are 1 block away and we typically have 80 to 100 car loaded freight trains on a high speed rural rail moving from 30 to 70 mph and passing thru from every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes most of the day. So, yes vibration is a killer. I really do not like CFL bulbs, I have had 1 flame out and 1 smoke and stink. Mainly grain, corn syrup, coal and steel.

I’d say Cree seems to be your bet. Suppose to work with both leading and trailing edge dimmers.

Cree bulbs are only available from home depot (or online resellers). ”Cree 60W 2700K”:http://www.homedepot.com/p/Cree-60W-Equivalent-Soft-White-2700K-A19-Dimmable-LED-Light-Bulb-BA19-08027OMF-12DE26-2U100/204592770 Cree 75W 2700K 2700K is incandescent like warm white color.

They seem to be the most universally dimmable LED and I have a Home Depot close by.

Thanks

If you need to buy new dimmer, Cree has a list of tested / confirmed working dimmers. Mostly cooper, leviton, lutron cree_dimmer_compatibility.pdf

In my Hunter ceiling fan’s remote there is a small switch behind the battery cover that can toggle between normal (incan) and CFL bulbs. When set to incan it can dim LED bulbs.

So, stopped by Home Depot and picked up 3 Cree 2700 60w equivalent bulbs. I installed 1 into my ceiling fan and it would not dim properly, removed the one working incan and installed a second Cree and what do you know… It worked great. I get a tiny bit of flicker on the lowest settings, but I hardly ever use them and the globe takes almost all of the visible issue out.

Oh, and the color of the light is awesome! These will not be my last Cree bulbs.

Thanks Matt

If you cant find a dimmable LED bulb, change the dimmer to a switch.

LEDs work in my Hunter fan with dimmer.
