Olight M20SX Javelot review (820 lm,XM-L2 Dedome,18650/2xCR123A)

Greetings,

Today’s review will be dedicated to a M20SX Javelot tactical flashlight. The model is not new, even pretty much old in the flashlight world, but the “Javelot” in the name can suggest a change in the model, vs older ones. This flashlight uses dedomed LED, that allows it to reach a distance of 370 meters, with only a 35.5mm head diameter.

A little comparison of the previous (M20SX-L2) and the new upgraded model. Note the 3x candelas difference - that’s a direct result of the dedoming.

Let’s start

As other models in the Javelot line, M20SX comes in a plastic case.

The flashlight comes bundled with a holster, lanyard, battery magazine, spare o-rings,silicon rubber replacement boot, diffuser and user manual.

The lanyard feels great, the same lanyard as on other recent Olight flashlights. The diffuser is made of some sort of resin/silicone, with a plastic lens.

The holster feels very well made, it’s not really soft and not really hard and looks like it’s made for work and not only for holding the flashlight. The flashlight can be used without pulling it out from the holster.

Here it is, the hero of the review. Feels very solid and well made, the model is hardly being changed aesthetically for a good reason.

Nicely machined bezel.

Controlling the light is really simple, as described on the siimple chart.
Holding the side tail button from any mode activates strobe mode. Pressing it shortly while the light is on will switch modes. A single press on the tail button will turn on the flashlight on the last mode used, double click will MAX it while triple click will turn on strobe mode.

The flashlight can be taken apart into 3 parts. The back threads are anodised, the forward are not. The contact at the head unit is made by a small spring that should be able to absorb shock, in case the flashlight will be weapon mounted.

Here is a comparison with the more powerful M23. Looks less fierce.

Фонарь сам, с М23 на XP-L Dedome и с M23 + ZL SC600W II . Полосатая лошадь снизу.
Here is the M20SX, M23 and Zebralight SC600W MK2. The zebra is at the bottom. As you can see the tint is not bad.

Here is the flashlight in my rather small hand, and the brightness stabilization graph. Far from ideal…

How does it look in real life?

A pleasure to use. Bad tint as a result of dedome? Nope, don’t see any here.

Throw (measured from a 1 meter distance)

Not bad at all, especially compared with the older model that has the same size.

The flashlight is silent on all modes, but uses PWM on a frequency a little more than 1kHz, that is not detectable by most of us without equipment.

Conclusion

Great light. It’s not the ideal flashlight, but it surely tries.

I’d like to thank Olight for providing me the review sample
