Olight S30R Baton II Review (1020 lm,XM-L2 U3,18650/2xRCR123)

Greetings,
This review will be dedicated to another new Olight flashlight, the S30R II. I was not expecting a refresh of relatively model so fast.

What’s interesting about this light?

1. Built in charger, and bundled a very decent battery. You don’t need to think about batteries, protection, voltages and charging algorithms, one flashlight is enough.
2. Usage of XM-L2 U3 bin LED. The specs are much improved vs the predecessor.
3. A new button. I think it will gradually change the existing S Baton series button.
4. A magnet at the tail that adds functionality.

Here is a short comparison with the older model. Note the massive improvement in low brightness modes.

Let’s go

Like other S seties flashlights, it comes in a transparent plastic box

The flashlight is bundled with an impressive capacity 3200 or 3600 mAh battery. In my case it was the 3600.

The flashlight comes with the battery, spare o-rings and a mysterious black box

The box contains the charger, user manual and the charging cable (standard micro USB cable)

User manual, without embarassing mistakes. Flashlight UI is one of the more logical at the moment, at my opinion.

Holding the button from off position turns the flashlight on in moonlight mode (1 lumen).
A short click will turn the flashlight on on the last mode used (mode memory).
Double click - turns the flashlight in Turbo mode.
Triple click - strobe mode
Holding the button while the flashlight is on cycles through modes
Short click - turns the flashlight off

The final result - a simple enough interface, that allows you tu turn the flashlight on on a known mode every time.

Here it is. Very nice feeling, Why shouldn’t it be?

The knurling is of the low-medium aggressiveness. The tail part contains a strong magnet. It held the flashlight (off course including battery) securely on a refrigerator and on a washing machine.

Here is a comparison with S30. The newer model has a nicer and a little bit larger tailcap.

The LED is nicely centered, no issues with dust/fingerprints on the inside part. The AR coating can be easily noticed.

The button feels nice, hard enough for not being turned on inside pockets and soft enough for comfortable usage. I find it easier without looking at the flashlight than the previous one.
There is a low battery indicator, speaking of which …

1. The bundled battery is not a regular 18650 battery. The positive and negative leads are all on one side. The flashlight works without problem with regular cells as well, it just can’t charge them.
2. The battery is inserted with the negative lead forward. The tailcap contacts both leads.

1 lumen mode

The negative lead (the one that is located at the head part of the flashlight, not in the tailcap has a spring for allowing contact. The threads are anodized and come nicely lubed.

Regarding the charger:

1. The charging current is 1 ampere (off course if your adapter can supply it)
2. The charger limits the current passed at 1.5 amperes. Meaning that if you are charging a phone that takes 1 ampere it will get 1 ampere. If you charge the flashlight it will get 1 ampere. If both are connected - it limits the output to external device at 0.5. The moment you remove the flashlight - the current is 1 ampere.
3. The red LED is activated when the flashlight is being charged. At any other mode the green LED is on (including when the flashlight is not in charging position).

How about some light?

I know that a tint is a lottery, but I am not used to win. When I first knew the flashlight is based on U3 bin I thought the tint will be a noticeable blue one. But the reality proved to be different, the flashlight gives rather neutral nice light.

Some measurements

It is not a thrower, looking for impressing throw I’d recommend to look elsewhere. The flashlight is rather flooder.

Final thoughts

Another quality product. If you need a all in one solution, or would like to give a really impressive and useful present - this flashlight is a great option.

I’d like to thank Olight for providing me the review sample

Thanks for the review viperxp.

If you do a quick click, does it go to moonlight/turbo with the mode memory? Or does it just go to last remembered mode that is l-m-h?

Quick click from off goes to last remembered mode including moonlight and “turbo.” There is no separate turbo mode though. There is moon, low, med, high.
