Bare BLF A6 Interest List (coupon now public)

Update 2016-01-07: The coupon expired again and was extended again. Same coupon code as before.

——

Update 2015-11-01: The coupon expired, but a new coupon is available: 8d7e0d ($27)
That’s a zero, not a capital oh; copy-and-paste is recommended when entering the code.

——

Update 2015-09-29: My order came in; pics are at the bottom of this post.

——

Update 2015-09-28: I got a green light from Banggood to keep sending coupon codes even though we’re over 100 units. It looks like they can produce more on demand. I think I’ve PM’d the coupon to everyone who asked.

——

Update 2015-09-17: The item is available for purchase, and coupon codes have been sent to people on the list.

——

The bare / non-anodized BLF A6 has been getting a lot of questions and not many answers. This thread is an interest list for that light, to help Banggood and Manker figure out how many to make.

So, if you want a bare aluminum, non-anodized BLF A6, please say here what you would like and how many. For example,

Quote:

I’m in for 2 × 3D and 1 × 5A

FAQs about the bare aluminum light…

  • It will be silver in color.
  • It will be completely bare, with no coating of any kind.
  • It will be easier to dent or scratch than the regular hard-anodized version. However, it looks nice and the scratches shouldn’t be as visible.
  • Tailcap lockout will not work on this version, but the tail button is a hard power cutoff so it has zero parasitic drain while off.
  • The parts should be identical to the regular BLF A6, but without the anodizing, so the parts can be mixed and matched.
  • Thermal properties may differ from the anodized version, but we’re not sure about the exact details.
  • Bare aluminum will “rust” over time (oxidize), but aluminum oxide looks nearly identical to pure aluminum so it’s not really noticeable. Note that aluminum “rust” is self-limiting. Not harmful at all, will not continue to eat the metal. Unlike the rust that most people are more familiar with.
  • I don’t have confirmation about whether there is any engraving (BLF logo) or not.
  • There is no serial number, and your position on the list doesn’t matter.
  • All the other parts are the same as the regular A6.

If you’re interested, sign up below. Smile

Update 2015-09-29: My order came in today. It’s a nice-looking light, and I took some pictures to show it. The black-and-silver color scheme works well:

Here is how it compares to some of the other BLF special edition lights: (anodized BLF A6, bare aluminum BLF A6, original BLF EE X6, steel+copper BLF X6v2 prototype)

People had been very curious about the logo engraving, and so was I. Here are three shots at increasing zoom levels to show the detail:

With no anodized layer to smooth out the surface, the knurling is very grippy and even the smooth parts of the light have a texture which increases friction. Aluminum is pretty soft though, so if you want to polish the surface it shouldn’t take a great deal of effort. However, it also will be relatively easy to dent and scratch.

I know the specs should be the same but does this also come with the deep carry clip, nice lanyard and in the BLF gift box? I’m hoping for the BLF engraving too but the specs, accessories and gift box are the critical ones for me. If those things are part of the deal and the price are the same count me in for one in 3D. Thanks! This light looks really good naked.

I’m gonna go ahead and be the one who predicts there will be no possibility of engraving this light.

I bet you are right, the engraving on the anodized light is just the removal of the anodization in that spot. The laser power required to etch bare metal enough to be visible is much higher.

Yeah I have a feeling you’re right about that. That’s not a deal breaker for me just a nice-to-have. As long as they are in gift boxes with all the same goodies as the anodized version can I get my 1 3D with serial #10? That leads me to another question. How will they be putting the serial numbers on these lights?

The very same....just no ano Smile

Should be but Neal is checking on that to be sure. Actually with engraving a coating is applied and where the laser burns is where that coating becomes etched into the metal.

I don't think so. TK's wand is a bit overworked. LOL

Nice, how long do we have to decide? I’ll put myself down for a 5A, I was hoping to maybe get a 3D and 5A tint here to compare before deciding, but my order has still not shipped :’(

Put me down for one please, I cannot resist the need to polish this to a mirror finish.

Sapphire has zero to do with aluminum. Aluminum Oxide is the stuff they use for sandpaper, very tough, and the “rust” aluminum produces. All things disintegrate, the question is how many hundreds or thousands of years it takes to do so. Highway Signage is made from Aluminum. Ever see a highway sign disintegrate? They’re in all weather, exposed to the very worst nature has to offer, and they are there til the paint is worn and faded, the kids are done shooting them, and still, they stand, paying homage to a rule or a warning that once was. So, the simple answer, not in our lifetime. Not flaming or attacking, just meaning to inform.

And I will engrave my own, thank you. Wink I might even clear anodize it. Just for fun.

I am in for one in 3D Smile

Is there any possibility to get a bare 18350 tube in the later 18350 GB? I would suspect not but i have to ask.

If I can really get this in metallic finish,
1 × 3D (my preferred tint & finish, truly close to a self-customized light).

- Also planning on the 18350 tubes, so…

I plan to get a 5A with anodizing to tell them apart (partly as an experimental tint), but that’s reportedly sold out. So, wanting Mankers, but no order yet Tired Should I order the ano’d 5A anyway to ‘get in line’?

This is a nice feature, and nice of them to get these for us. Thanks. Even though it’s arguably less work for Manker (one less production step), it does take extra work to set this up for us in a limited run. I’ve never been a big fan of anodizing, and let’s face it, most coatings on budgets lights suck. I think sometimes it’s actually paint.

Thought process for those wavering, or just discussion:
- Shiny flashlights seem to be a natural choice for something you may be looking for in the dark! Never made sense to me for something designed to be used, and sometimes found, in the dark, for it to be colored black! Especially when camping and you’re rummaging around in a large pack or sack! I want to see that reflection!
- If you’re buying multiple tints, you’ll be able to tell the lights apart easier.
- You don’t want branding on the light (no ‘engraving’).
- This is a fully recessed clicky hard switch, so like ToyKeeper said, Lockout won’t be necessary for most people with this. Lockout is pretty important with soft switches, though (grrr).
- No chance of anodization interfering with your electrical conductivity (this is more of a LOL, but I have had it happen, including on a Convoy C8!).
- I’m not much about looks, but I really like the looks and feel of bare smooth metallic.
- Actually, though easier to scratch, if it’s scratched, it’s not as noticeable. There’s just no anodizing to wear out over time with pocket carry, like my keychain flashlights.
- This is a ‘rare’ option, though I don’t know why, considering budget Chinese manufacturers are always looking to save a half-cent on something.

- Circumcision, regardless gender, by definition causes sensation loss, and thereby usually causes difficulty later in life. Oppose amputation of children's genitals. ALL children. http://tinyurl.com/haszs6o

Hi TK, thanks for gathering this interest thread.
Please add me for a 3D and 5A version.

I bought the 5A in the regular, but specifically held off the 3D. I assumed it was more likely the bare un-anodised version (if it was even being produced) would be of such small quantity that it would only be a specific tint and no choice as per the regular one.

Perhaps this thread is proving me wrong?!

Hi, some notes about questions asked above.

If the logo can go on the light, it will. If not, it won’t. It’s not a per-light choice though.

There are no serial numbers, and the list is alphabetic to make it clear that each person’s position on the list doesn’t matter.

The finish isn’t clear anodized or silver anodized, nor is it metallic. It is bare metal.

My responses may be slow for a while, since I’m spending most of the week away from civilization.
