What XM-L2 / XP-L tint is closest to neatral white?

I haven’t been keeping up with tints. I’ve been so focused on drivers and firmware lately but now that they are getting completed I’ve started to build some lights. I’ve got a few Convoy hosts for 16mm MCPCBs that I’m building for friends and just dove into my stash of 16mm XM-L2 T6 4C… and man is that one ugly tint! :Sp It’s so bad I thought I’d ruined the LED with too much heat so I replaced it. Same awfulness. Removed the lens in case the AR was the culprit… it wasn’t.

I know Nichia’s have nice tint, but with these lights output is important so I’ll want to stick with either XM-L2 or XP-Ls. I have some older XM-L2 T6s that have much nicer tints in some of my older lights, but I don’t remember exactly which ones as it was some time ago I got them.

I need to buy another stash of 16mm LEDs as these 4Cs where clearly a mistake. I can’t sell lights to friends with this awfulness as I can’t stand it myself. MT-G2s have my favorite tint, but I need 3V LEDs for these single cell lights. What is the tint to get if I’m aiming for around neutral white?

Edit: It’s XM-L2 T6 4C I have, not XP-L.

I believe the 3C is the tint you are looking for.

You’ve basically asked a religious question, you know. :slight_smile:

Neutral white is going to be somewhere around 5k, maybe a bit less, so try a 3C or 3D.

You can get neutral white and lots of output from Nichia now, by the way. The 5k Nichia 219c emitters are just beautiful, with better CRI than Cree, and have good output as well.

IOS is out of 3D tint XPL. If you want to use only XPL, leddna has XPL V6 3A.

As for XML2, Cutter has XML2 U2 3D and leddna has XML2 T6 3A.

You can get the XM-L2 U3 3D from IOS. Slightly better than 3C, better than 3A and surely a whole lot better than 3B.

Yeah, I guess so… but as I’m asking for close to neutral rather than tint of choice I was kind of hoping I’d sneak around the religious stuff… but on the other hand I’ve offended the 4C clan, so much for sneaking :smiley:

Ahh, I didn’t catch on about the 219c. I’ll get me one of these for testing, they look pretty good on paper (just did a search and found djozz’s test).

I don’t know if I got a bad batch or something. On a white wall mine are greenish. If you like this greenish tint I can send you mine free of any charge as indemnity because I can’t use them.

I don’t know how much it would be to send from Sweden to France but I would be glad to use them if they are real 4C emitter…
I never find them greenish, even on white wall.
It’s my favorite tint and I am waiting for two more emitters to convert my S30 and my Thorfire C8 with them :slight_smile:
I haven’t seen any 3C though so maybe I would prefer it, I’ll have to test one day

XM-L2 3C or the slighly warmer 4D (not greenish as 4C).

I was planning to purchase one in the next few days, but I did sent a question and 4-5 days no response from this seller…
are these genuine? anyone tried?

Well, I’ll just stick ’em in a padded envelope and send them, it won’t cost much. PM me your address and I’ll do it within a few days. The only thing I ask is if you can verify if the tint is as supposed to be. I’d assume they are real 4Cs as I’ve got them from either Mountain Electronics, 3Tronics or IOS. I don’t remember which one but I’ve only ordered LEDs from these sources.

I went through my stash and found a few 20mm U2 3Cs and that tint appears to be very nice. I’ve just placed an order for a few on 16mm together with some Nichia 219Cs. I’ll do a side by side test in identical lights to see which one I like most.
