Best C8

Which in your opinions is the better C8, the Thorfire or Convoy ?
I have already placed an order for the modded joint CPFI/BLF Cometa light & wish to purchase one of these C8”s also.

Interesting what people who own both think!

We got 2 Convoys C8
A grey warm white 3 mode ordered directly from Simon.
A mat black neutral white 5/3 mode

They both got a high quality finish and feel to them. If I were to buy a light that could be ordered from Simon or another vendor I would certainly go with Simon since the communication was clear, last minute changes are possible (I changed the color to grey the day it was shipped) and he does things for BLF so I want to support that.

My vote goes to the ThorFire C8s - Very good mode spacing, hidden strobe, good quality and in mine I can insert protected or unprotected cells.

For unknown reasons my Convoy C8 does not allow shorter, unprotected 18650 cells. Have to insert a piece of metal or aluminum foil to make it work.

That is too bad, mines accept unprotected with no problems

Cells are not really an issue as I have plenty, unprotected, protected, flat top & button top.
I already have quality cells & chargers & a reasonable knowledge of care & maintenance of them.
Apart from 2 quality headlamps (Fenix & Olight) my torches are all cheap Chinese ones & I have decided to buy some better quality ones.
The Thorfire & Convoy are not much more (in some cases less) money than the cheap Chinese ones I already have so I have decided to upgrade a bit

I already had a Convoy C8 (XM-L2 U2 SMO)… and now also have a Thorfire C8s too, which is also XM-L2 U2 and SMO…

I like them both.

I prefer the Thorfire C8s slightly more as it still has a “removable pill”, rather than an integrated shelf… which makes it easier for me to “mod”. My Convoy has an integrated shelf, and as my soldering skills aren’t the best, it makes it difficult for me to solder new LED stars in without accidentally touching the LED dome etc…

Also, the driver in the Thorfire C8s has 4 great mode spaces by default and allows 2x CR123A compatibility. My Convoy now has a Q-lite driver in it (but as standard had an “AK-47” driver?), and only runs on 18650 batteries.

My Thorfire is also maybe 3mm shorter… but that doesn’t really make any difference.

You wont be disappointed with either of them. Both excellent builds and are great “in the hand”. Both throw quite nicely.

Convoy is one of my all time favourite brands… but Thorfire is coming up with some great stuff too now, that equals Convoy.

Thanks for the replies so far
Rather than asking which light is the better maybe I should have said what are the advantages (if any) of one over the other ?
Both are within a couple of £”s GBP purchase price of each other & they will be run stock not modded.

as stated before:

- ThorFire C8s has a nicer driver and also takes 2x CR123A; more compatibility there

  • Convoy is likely to be had with more/better tints but (most likely) a more “standard” driver and usually takes 1x 18650 only.

In my opinion ThorFire has a slightly better quality, but this might as well be the Convoy C8 I received (which has the battery issue and slightly (!) worse edges/fit/anodization). In real life both should be on par.

Also - my ThorFire came in a box with spare parts (IIRC o-rings, switch). My Convoy came with nothing. <- I don’t know what the box will bring in your region/market.

Stock, I believe they are both very well made lights. Machine work is nearly identical. I would probably just choose whichever is cheaper.
Simon at Convoy does offer quite a few options to his line, while the Thorfire only has 2 models. I will share a screenshot I got off of Amazon a few days ago.
It listed an upgraded version of the Thorfire C8s. It was listed as not available, and has been since taken down, but the Thorfire rep on this board commented about the new tailcap, and internal changes. I’m really diggin that new tailcap, and will purchase one (like I really need another C8) once they are available.

An advantage of Thorfire is that you can buy it from a UK seller (Amazon), albeit for a few £ more than a Chinese source. So you get a better warranty i.e. easier to return faulty items.

Have you considered the XinTD C8?

I have a Convoy C8 and have had probably 8 or so XinTD C8s over time and still own two of them. I would always recommend an XinTD C8 over the others I have tried. (Haven’t tried a Thorfire…)

They both appear to be available on Amazon for £15.99 delivered, although I believe they are both the older models ?

They are 4 times the price of the Convoy or Thorfire if this is the light you are referring to.

Although Richard (RMM) is out of stock at the moment, this is the XinTD C8 (or one like it) that LSX was referring to.

+1 on the XinTD.

I purchased two KD XML2 U3 OP reflector one-mode C8s yesterday .

One mode lights are great for bike lights , as they don't mode shift when going over rough terrain .

They are also good for people who just like a simple user interface .

You linked an X3. That’s a great light but its not a C8. Here’s the XinTD C8: http://intl-outdoor.com/xintd-c8-v5-xpg2-s4-multioption-18650-flashlight-p-789.html

I linked you to the XP-G2 version because it offer much more throw than the XM-L2 lights, but its available either way. Convoy and Thorfire only ship theirs with XM-L2, although either could be easily modded.

I own some of all of them:

The XinTD is clearly the superior light in a C8 at the moment. The Convoy and Thorfire are both fine lights though, and yes they’re cheaper. I really can’t comment on which is better since most of the differences being discussed here are about drivers/UI and none of mine contain the original equipment for comparison anymore. As hosts for future modding projects I’d say they’re pretty much equal, but again the XinTD is the winner.

Owned quite a few Ultrafire, Tangsfire and Convoys, this is the only C8 worth keeping in my opinion. If I knew that they were going discontinue, I would bought a few more.

well the TinTD sees allmost twice the price, it better be superior

Thanks to this topic I did some lookie lookie at Thorfire, their VG10 looks interesting (also the text in the linked product is hilarious at some places)
If nothing else comes up I will order it tomorrow (like the moonlight and need another flashlight for my wife who simply does not want to part with a cheap, greenish shining, copper colered zoomie without memory, low battery warning but with strbe and sos blinky, I really want her to have a much better light, she refused the C8s, just too big

I have the VG10, it is a very good light! The grip ring can be removed independently and the quality is very good. AR coated glass lens, more robust build.
