92cri and 2500+ lumens in an S2+, with only a little cheating involved

…………………………….

Most people love the Nichia 219b, and I especially love the 4500k version. It’s the most pleasant tint my eyes have yet seen from an LED, and it’s nice to know that if my life ever depended on differentiating colors, the 219b would give me the best chance  . The trade-off has always been that you get the great tint and CRI, but you lose the big impressive lumens that a Cree LED will give you. So how did I get 2500+ lumens from a Nichia 219b? I used a triple, and I used XP-L’s.

…………………………….

………………………………

Yeah, I cheated. I made triple with a single Nichia 219b sw45, and two XP-L HI 3D’s. A TripleDown Rev2 driver gives control over both. Low, Medium, and High are on the Nichia, and Turbo toggles the XP-L’s. I have up to 2.2amps of regulated beautiful Nichia goodness, but if I need to blast someone away I can kick on the FET for 8+amps of not-too-shabby 3D tint (8amps measured by my new clamp meter on a 30Q at only 4volts). The triple spacer was made by soldering two stripped Sinkpads to the top of the pill.

I also included a first-of-its-kind illuminated tailcap with a metal button. Here it is next to the ‘standard’ red illuminated tailcap that lives next to my bed.

The new Convoy deep-carry clip and a ring magnet, along with ability to use 18650 or 18350 make it a very versatile light. Thanks for looking!

Wow, what a bright idea. I love your work PD.

That triple down driver sounds great.

That is a fine mod right there…. The cheat is ingenious and gives big light when you want it, with the fine high CRI Nichia for general use… Very impressive PD.

The only problem I see is the number of requests you will get to sell that thing…

Nice new setup. I'm very envious.

LOL!! Read my mind!!!

(…so…how much  )

PD that’s an awesome idea! I love triple S2+’s and that one is certainly unique. I may have to acquire one of your triple-down drivers and see what I can come up with. Or I may just copy yours

Could you elaborate on the tailcap setup? I’ve got several of your boards on order from oshpark and three of them are slated to go into my S2+’s. Would you mind sharing what’s in those tailcaps - which boards, resistor values, etc?

It’s a Rev4 board. I still haven’t received the newest boards from Osh, and I’m not sure they would work under the metal button anyways. I have a washer cut from some clear plastic sheet, and I used 50k pots. I had to remove the black silicone bit in the tail to let the light through, so I tried to get back a bit of water resistance by slipping in a piece I cut from a Ziploc bag. In my testing it actually works really well, as long as you don’t rip the Ziploc piece when you’re installing it.

How in the world did you get an efficient match with the optic and 2 different shaped leds? I have had this though for a while, but was considering doing with an X6. I did not figure it would work due to the different shapes!

very impressive

Great idea pilotdog68! You surely gave me something to think about on my next build. Very useful flashlight.

Very nice! The mod combines a combination of your developed skills, well done.

awesome job!

Someone has escaped the box :open_mouth:

Great idea and implementation.

Cheers David

A very inspirational post pilot dog, any chance of a few beamshots please

Sweet light. Have you had a chance to try out the Nichia 219Cs?

Very nice!

Send it over to me, & I'll add a side switch to it.

You may not get it back, though :)

cheater!!

nice idea though! Only running two XPL's, how much longer does it take to get the light hot?

I love it and your abilities. I just dont understand electronic thingys.

I understand part of the electronic thingys but I can not do them, same result

Try a piece from a latex glove! If you’re putting it where I think. (Non-latex gloves have less stretch) Silicone universal keyboard protector sheets are also an option, 71 cents shipped.
