Oh yeah, just what I’m looking for. Count me in. I camp with the kids several weeks out of the year. If it could switch from white to red light like the Fenix CL25R can, that would be a big bonus in my book.

This sounds like a great project.

Just one question; Where are you getting the SRK clone with threadded LED plate?

That’s a good question. This one here was one i had sitting around since last year unused or modded, it was a random 4-emitter one i won from ebay for 23 bucks. It had four XM-Ls on separate 16mm stars cemented to a aluminum plate that is roughly1/8” thick and threaded into the body right below the lens.

How about a smaller one too? 1 or 2 cells?

Are there any good dome-shaped diffusers already on the market that fit a SRK ?

You know , for us budget guys …

Side story …

During our last hurricane-induced power outage I noticed that all of my flashlights were not in their usual place when I went to get one .

After a brief search , I found that my daughter had all of them -__ tailstanding on her bathroom counter on high__ – so she could apply her makeup .

Apparently , this procedure requires a lot of light .

Which she had plenty of .

I wonder what she thinks of the strobe mode for that activity.

I’m interested in one for sure. I can use another lantern. Maybe 18sixfifty can chime in.
He’s built a few lanterns in his day.

Actually i already modified a Roche F6 single-18650 with warm white XM-L, a Q-lite 105 with reduced number of 7135 chips to increase the run times, and built a special removable diffuser that converts in into a functional lantern much better than diffusers does. On medium-mode with a 3000mah cell it runs for 12 hours non stop, and puts out roughly 200 lumens, brighter than most store bought “crap” led full size lanterns. ( can take photos if wished)

not that i know of, though i built a few to try on SRKs, they have to many limitations on stock SRK lights to use as a lantern.

I’m in too. I love a good lantern.

John 12:46 “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” Genesis 1:3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Excited about this project! I have been looking for a good lantern for some time now. Smile

No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.

My SRK-Based Lantern… This is an old SRK clone with five genuine LB from GB and disposable plastic cup.

If anything can go wrong, it will.

Excellent concept! Very interested to see how you execute this… seems like it would have potential to be a very popular group buy. I have no doubt that the vacuum of worthwhile LED lanterns will finally be facing elumination! Lol, Oops.

I am definitely in if the price is able to be kept or optioned on the economical side, or probably as soon as my budget will let me.
I had just recently broke down and started brainstorming ideas to mod a small, cheap, poorly executed 4x AA 5mm glare emitter/lantern to run on an 22650 or maybe 2 18650(s) adding a diffused output and efficient warm emitter and driver. I really like the downward firing emitter idea, sounds like the kind of thinking that has been absent from commercial LED lantern manufacturers all along. Sounds like you are off to a very promising start!

I have one more consideration, even though I’m sure I can trust that aspect with you: make the lantern very attractive looking Smile (even though IMO it does not necessarily have to mimic an old-school kerosine lantern)

In my opinion this is much more important for a lantern than it is for a flashlight: a lantern, when camping, is often the center of the attention, and must add to the good vibes of being in the open. I see the cheap plastic angry-blue crap everywhere and that immediately makes me feel depressed, while my handsome old Feuerhand always makes me smile.
