I am sure that I read this somewhere here, but I think that using the Q8 battery tube and Narsil ramping UI for this lantern would be a great base to build on. The lighted E-switch on the Q8 has such a low parasitic drain that I do not think that it is a problem at all. In the ideas thread there is talk of making a battery tube to use four 18350’s and a head with a reflector for a pop can thrower. The thrower head, Q8 head, 18350, 18650 and maybe a eight 18650 battery tube would all lego together. How cool would it be to add the lantern head to the Q lego party. I think that this would be a pretty cool system.

This could become an amazing “do it all” lighting kit.

I wonder if there would be any way to turn the lighted switch on/off through the driver? At times the switch might be nice, but for many this may serve as an emergency light source, and I certainly wouldn’t want any more drain than necessary when faced with a multi-day blackout.

Well, with 12,000 mah cells, the lighted switch would take 10 years to run down, so drain is really not an issue.

TK has mentioned that it’s possible to adjust the brightness in software. So perhaps a newer version of Narsil can incorporate that feature.

The current Q8 software can already turn the switch light off with a few precise button actions. And of course the switch light can be programmed to stay off all the time through the menu options.

Is this still an idea or have plans been finalized? Has any price been determined?

I thought we were still in the idea phase, but people keep signing up and I’m not sure what kind of light they’re signing up for exactly.

This is in the design stages at the moment with the small team we have working on it. Right now were discussing the driver design. Between TheMiller, DEL, Toykeeper, Myself, & others. Like the Q8 it will take some time to work out an established design base, then work out details with an established manufacturer, then the pre-testing of manufacturer prototypes before final production of units. ( like the Q8 process) TheMIller can answer those specifics experienced team member based on the success of the Q8. Smile

This being BLF I thought it was everyone’s sworn duty to sign up for any new light, finalized or not.

Big Smile

The general idea of a very good, very practical lantern with cool features like on board charging and being able to use it as a powerbank is what people are signing up for now.
As always, this is not binding but a growing list helps to show interest and thus make the project viable

Costs, I am sure will be done roughly the same as the other three projects.
Napkin calculations based on costs of parts and what is available (with the Q8 we went with, if part A cost us 100 we calculate it as 50 to account for bigger quantities in buying and being closer to the source)

And look at the others:
Q8 vs lumen max M6 $40 incl shipping vs $95 exclusive shipping
Q8 vs TM06S $40 vs $90
GT vs TN42 $111/$150 vs $200/$249
FW3A vs D4 (that has a 18350 tube say $5) $30 vs $35

So I think it will be a fair price but as before not ultra cheap, quality and features do cost money. A lot of value though, that is the real aim.

Compared to the Q8: 1 led instead of 4, no chunky copper board, less aluminium needed, but added is onboard charging and powerbank function. $30 ??
I’m in for one, maybe later more if I can show a factory prototype to people.

I’m not in this team but can I do a suggestion? Use 3 18650’s parallel instead of 4 (and thus leave legoing with the Q8). I made a lantern attachment for my Q8, and although I used it with pleasure it is all pretty chunky and heavy, for me it will be more usable if the lantern is a bit leaner and more lightweight than SRK-size, and runtime will still be long with 3 batteries. It will also set the BLF-lantern more apart from the cheapo lanterns currently in the market.

Put you on the list for 30 craig-IL
Time not clear, I hope that Thorfire does it and it is done before summer northern part of world. But who knows Wink

Yes let us compare with Q8 from the ground up:

Tail
Lantern needs lanyard holes and tripod mount, little more expensive

Tail PCB and springs same

Tube same

Head bottom side
3 tripod mounts more machining but no shelf so thinner tube to make it from
Probably a little cheaper.

Driver
More expensive with charging and power bank chips and connectors

Led board cheaper for sure Wink

Top part head
No refector but the way to get power to the led and hold diffuser and transparent thing and heatsink makes for a lot of parts and steps to make.
Sure this all cost more

Larger better box , costs more.

So I don’t think $30 is realistic.

I think it will be more and writing all this $50 seems not a bad guess.
But feel free to correct me Wink

I don’t recall if it’s been asked but wouldn’t the ability to just get a lantern head that fits on the Q8 body be enough for most people? On the other hand the body is probably cheap compared to the head so that may be a non-starter.

Sigshooter lots of diffuser things can be used with the Q8 but DBSARs aim was a really good lantern
Hence the down facing LED in warm tint.
There are no real good ones now, either plastic or expensive or both
