Big (1-2S 26650s) zoomie emitter & lens questions

Hello!

Well, I’ve recently toasted the driver of a 26650 zoomie dud torch I had lying around unused. See here: CX2817 based buck driver mod info & question

I’m planning on turning it into something worthwhile. I’ve already decided on getting an efficient LD-29 driver.
Since it’s a zoomie, I thought it could get a nice throw improvement if equipped with a XP-L emitter.
I’m mainly considering these 2 options:

OR

The latter one I’d reflow on a cheap copper sinkpad over a frying pan. Is this worth the $1 extra cost over the domed XP-L V3 5D?

With regards to the lens, the torch uses something like this: 30mm 5-90 degrees plano-convex lens @FT
… but in cheap & chipped plastic. Is this worth the extra money? I don’t know if it would go well, the head travel distance is about 21mm 16mm. :disappointed:

Well, for now that’s all folks.

Salvador :crown:

P.S.: fixed head travel distance.

Duh! Somewhat forgot on this thread.

Changed my mind on this; for these who care:

UltraFire HWA§WYS mod I’m planning on doing

XP-L Hi has a 115 degree viewing angle.

XP-L is 125 degrees.

Top end output is similar, give or take 60 lumens.

You will get better throw with the XP-L Hi and that aspheric lens, when focused.

Thank you for your collaboration.

Well, as you can see the retaining threaded ring is slightly nicked.
That slight loss in distance to the lens means slightly less throw… and better flood.
Ironically, it’s their excellent flood ability while still being 0K throwers the real strong point of zoomies, don’t you think?
I’ll definitively go for an XHP50.

Cheers everyone

I have Brinyte B158’s with XM-L and XP-L Hi. The XP-L Hi will out-throw the XM-L and will also flood just as well. No contest IMO.

Something I was more or less aware of, yet I haven’t been able to do a direct comparison myself.
Anyway, for around a 3’7A (real) driving current (on 2S2P ≈6+V emitters), should I do XHP50 or XHP70?
Guess most of you would lean towards a better throw ability for an XHP50 vs an XHP70, doesn’t it?

Cheers fellas

Those are quad-die emitters - better suited to a reflector than an aspheric.
