best after trusfire t6 1600 lumens in the "throw" category???

Hi everybody!!

What is the best flashlight in the "throw" category after the trustfire T1 xm-l t6 1600 lumens, around the same price?? (+- 30$) and for one LED.

Fandyfire STL-V6, it will throw better than the one you mentioned with more lumens (out the front) too.... 46 shipped from DX.

Just some general information for you about LED outputs and the likes: The Cree XML LED that both these lights use has a maximum output of 1000 Lumen (under perfect conditions). This means when you account for the loss of efficiency as the LED heats up and other factors...even at the full 3 Amp current the LED will only achieve around 900-950. This loss is again added to when you take into account the reflectors and lenses...so really you would be lucky to get above 800 OTF (off the front) lumen. This is around half what is claimed by the resellers and goes to show that you have to take output number from these resellers with a gain of salt.

You will find that high output does not equal good throw...for that you need concentrated light. This means that even the smaller XR-E R2 can out throw the XML when given the same sized reflector. This is because the XR-E produces 250 lumen of light from an area of 1mm x 1mm (this is not the actual number...only an example) while the XML will produce 1000 lumen for an area 3mm x 3mm ....thus the XML has a area 9x greater then the XR-E (3x3=9 vs 1x1=1) but only produces 4x more light. This means to get throw equal to the XR-E you need a reflector a fair bit larger.

I will conclude this by saying that if you want throw..and throw only... buy a torch with a XR-E R2 LED and put a good focusing lens in it and it will happily out throw XMLs all day long at only 1/3 the power input. Otherwise do as 2100 suggests and get the STL-V2 which will produce throw while still giving you a wall of light.

Just to clarify: 2100 suggested Fandyfire STL-V6 (= Skyray STL-V2 = GOOD Thrower) as opposed to Fandyfire STL-V2 (= Skyray STL-V6 = 3 x XML "lots of lumens" / "wall of light").

Let's be careful with these names. It's very easy to mix them up.. :)

Well I guess if you are very particular about the name printed on the host, you'd have to pay that extra few bucks for the Sky Ray name, for the Sky Ray STL-V2. :)

They should be pretty much identical.

XM-L's die size is 2mm*2mm...

But an XR-E EZ900 R2 @1A is 253lm in 0.73mm² (contact pads taken into account)
and an XM-L U2 @3A is 975lm in 4mm² (no info on contact pads found);
that's 30% less, so 16% less throw. Thus an XM-L would need a 20% bigger reflector to compensate.
The difference is less if reflector imperfections have to be taken into account, as the bigger XM-L die is more forgiving for that.

That's cool, i don't know how to calculate that.

The FF STL-V6 has a front aperture of 55mm. The Solarforce Masterpiece Pro-1 is 49mm. Just measured. So it's 23.75cm^2 and 18.85cm^2 for area respectively. Is that 20% in diameter or area of circle?

On my meter, the MPP-1 has about 7% higher in lux numbers than the STL-V6. MPP-1 needs to be powered with 2-cells for this to happen, else 1-cell it would be below in throw than the STL-V6. Not sure what is the drive level of the STL-V6, but it seems to be pretty high and heatsinked pretty well. (2 min 45s before the lux numbers really start to slowly sink, and the fins start to become warm)

+1 for FannyFire STL-V6. It is now my favorite long distance gun light, or walkaround light. Light body, lots of throw and just enough spill. Another plus (at least for me) is, it doesn't have the FryRay name on it.

FannyFire does get in the way, at times. It is quite the conversation piece.

It is a light that makes you want to do your best Tim Allen impression.

You are both wrong: XR-E/XP-E - 1x1mm, XP-G - 2x2mm, XM-L 4x4mm.

Nah...

The Queen of LEDs, the mighty SST-90, is 3mm*3mm. XM-L is clearly smaller.

Maybe you confused that with 1mm², 2mm² and 4mm² ?

Thanks for clearing that up Dr Jones..I had a quick look for the die sizes of the XR-Es and XMLs but couldn't find it so I just used a number I thought would be close enough real measurements to get the point across (I made the numbers up :p ).

ok and what is your opinion for Sky Ray STL-V2 vs trustfire sst-80??? for throw distance and brightness... what is the best in two???

Reading this https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/1071#comment-19352 where the ST-50 (AKA SST-80) was improved by swapping in an XM-L, I'd expect the STL-V2 to be the better thrower.
