Powerful Thrower and Washout?

So does a real powerful thrower, aka spotlight, can it be so powerful that it will
‘washout’ what you are spotlighting as lesser distances, say 50 yards…while it would
show up well an object at 400 yards? It seems to do it in camera shots online, but what
about in real life?

400 yards is nothing. 2500 yards with bright spot is really something.

Agreed. But would that bright spot washout an object at 50 meters? Where a lesser light would
show it better?

Depends on object colour. XM-L2 @3A should do the trick.

On a K60 or K70 I just dial it down the power to where it does not washout the object…

From personal experience it does but it depends on how far it throws so how tight the hot spot is and the tint and the overall power.

6500k tint on my custom built C8 washes out until about 20m same light with the same power (tailcap amps) with a 3000k tint doesn’t. My stock L2 does but not that far as 50 meters.

Yeah, glare was the word I was looking for. Guess it pays to have different modes.

Yea the way im going I have no need for different modes just use different lights lol. when im out fishing or hunting I will always have a floody light and a thrower light on me.

Yes.

But that’s not a function of anything having to do with the light itself (source, color tint, beam shape, whatever), but with the way your eyeballs react to brightness.

The camera, a crude simulacrum of the barely-functional human eye, exaggerates the effect somewhat. Neither can cope with the contrast, unless your camera has special technology to “fake it” (e.g. “HDR”). Your eyeballs, being unable to cope, just stop down the iris to prevent damage from the light & allow the lion in the shadows to eat you.

BTW and FYI, among this group “a real powerful thrower” isn’t really interesting at only 400 yards away.

So I have a light that claims 700m throw…what is the real throw on that then? 400-500m?
If one says 1300m, what’s real throw? Can we just take say 80% or 70% to determine realistic
throw?

What throw do you actually see?

My Thorfire S70 throws 820, this I know.
The S50 does not reach that
Both light up the field next door and barn at 100 meter easy!
