I read on Cree’s website that there is a “now even brighter” series of XP-G2 and XP-L (i looked at the data sheet for the XP-L and thought I saw new W2 and W3 bins?)
There is no thread relating to this, but Cree regularly announces better bins (and so does Osram, Nichia etc.), which is nice, but you ask the right question: when do they become available?
First, Cree has a bad habit to list tints and output bins that never are seen in the wild.
Second, none of the flashlight builders on the forums is in the position to buy straight from Cree, so we are dependant on resellers. A few resellers that carry up-to-date leds are intl-outdoor.com, cutter.com.au and illumn.com (there are a few more, Mouser and Digikey usually do not have the best bins). They also follow the Cree news and we mere hobbyists are dependent on which and how many leds they buy in.
It’s an interesting post. When the XP-G first came out the bins crept up a few times. Cree did announce that SC5 tech would be incorporated into there product lines. Does this mean XM-L3’s and XP-L2’s or do existing bins just start creeping up? XP-G Q5 was king then the whole R2-R5 came through followed with S bins. Cree does tweak current LED’s, how many changes on the current ones with out name changes?
You kids got it easy these days I remember way back 5 years ago we were cramming 3,4 even 7 LED’s into lights just to get what 1 LED does today.
So the dome is smaller now? The reason why the dome was square with original XP-L is the diameter being larger than the base itself, when I first saw the picture I thought they were Nichias…
Just out of curiosity… can you test if they first under a carclo triple?
The particular part of the pdf that you posted is the same on the datasheets I have downloaded to my phone, which were put there a couple of months ago after I got a new phone, so it’s not something that’s super new.
However, I haven’t had time to look over the pdf posted on Cree’s website and see if there are any additional changes. The reason I say that is because there have been flux bins available as of late, from absolutely reliable sources, which eclipse the brightest bins Cree has published, perhaps they’ve updated the doc to make changes to thoses bins.
To answer the original question, like the others before me have posted, I have not seen any emitters available in the W bin range.

ETA:
That’s quite interesting, if they changed the dome geometry them perhaps the beam pattern will be sans rings now?
How’s the beam pattern?
Is that a genuine Cree, not a LB copy or some other counterfeit?
Not at the moment, if i had thought about it when i was putting everything together i would have, but all those triples are in things i dont want to tear apart again at the moment just for that. one of those 21 xpls is the old style square ones, see if you can spot it.
They dont look like that, they were definitely xpls they had the same die and bond wires, just that the dome was less square, its like they figured out a way to cover the whole die without resorting to cutting the corners off as drastically.
