What about the Hugsby torches? No bonny colours but they’re acknowledged to be very good. I have an AAA, an AA, an AA x2 and an AAA x3. All were less than £6/$9 or so.

I was going to say these but the xp1 and xp2 only have one mode. But the xp2 is bright and cheap.

‘Moonlight’ is in the title, so I guess those are a no-go.

Pardon a dim old Geordie for being a bit thick – totally forgot about the moonlight…..

Is the Warsun X65 a solid light?
The successor of the Warsun X65 is the Warsun X50. Same body, better LED (XM-L2 instead of XM-L), price about 1$ more. This light is very solid, I gave it to my 8 year old son a couple of months ago. It fell down quite often, still works perfect. Best zoomie you can get for that money.
There also is a 3 color version of this light: “Sharp Eagle ZQ-SH-01”. White/amber/blue, but I would rather recommend the X50.

I have a L3 Illuminations L10 flashlight. It’s a 1xAA light, with 4 modes (including a true moonlight), a twisty interface, and an excellent high CRI LED (the Nichia 219A). I think I got mine on sale for $20, so it might just fit into your price range.

It’s a good camping light, 4 useful output modes to choose from (around 0.1 lumens, 3 lumens, 30 lumens, 120 lumens), waterproof, etc. Excellent tint for hikes in the woods, it won’t wash out colors like regular cool-white LEDs do.

As others mentioned, the Astrolux A01 (with Nichia 219 LED) is a similar light, though it uses a AAA battery so run time is more limited, and probably not as high quality. Maybe not good for camping, because you probably don’t want to run out of light on a hike.

I recommend one of your carry at least one quality 2xAA or 4xAA light, for extended run time and higher output if needed. Something like an Armytek Prime A2 (2xAA) or Sunwayman D40A (4xAA) will serve you well for camping. They’re more expensive, but good to have. Both have moonlight modes.

I like my Thorfire TG06 using 1×AA NiMH. The low mode isn't a true sub-lumen moonlight but it is dim enough when I wake up at night and need to walk somewhere without losing my vision. It's the best $10 1×AA light you can get (probably one of the best under $20 as well)

Just for a moment... Okay I may stay a little longer

Another AA choice is the wk50 on sale on ebay for under $10. Link.

Runs on a single AA, 4 modes, 3 lumens on moonlight mode..no blinkies! Smile It is also Pink, or dragon pink.

This is what I hate about buying from US companies. $7.50 for the light, plus $16.35 to ship it across the border to Canada. Ridiculous shipping rates, and it’s only about a week faster than shipping from China.

And in both cases (US or China), it makes no sense to ship a light back if it’s defective, so warranties are essentially useless.

Pretty sure Xtar is Chinese and these are coming from their US warehouse. I agree the US shipping to anywhere outside the US is ridiculous. Is there not a minimum before free shipping from the Canadian side?

Checking shipping in the US, you pay $7.50 a light, and then $2.50 each for shipping until you get to $30, then free shipping. So three lights costs the same as four! I am hoping there is something similar to outside the US…

As far as AA and AAA non rechargeable batteries go, I stick with the dollar store “Sunbeam” brand Alkalines, which are about 90% capacity of a Duracell/Energizer/RayOvac at less than 25% of the cost. I can run AAA all the time for those prices of 25 cents each compared to a dollar or more for the others. If you go the NiMh route, only runtime will suffer between AA and AAA

ALL of my links are non-affiliated for your pleasure...

The only cases where I can justify using alkaleaks, is when I’m giving the light away. Most people wouldn’t know what to do with a rechargeable, so alkaleaks make more sense in those cases.

For everything of mine, I use Eneloops. For things like flashlights, they pay for themselves after just a few uses. And in things that seldom need recharging (like remotes), I don’t have to worry about leaks. It only takes 1 leak to ruin a $50 device, and you can buy 16 Eneloops for that price.

By the way thanks for the info on the Amazon AA rechargeables. I just ordered some and saved at least $30 not buying Eneloops.
