Problem solved! Continuing on, a quest for the best way to keep my stuff on the site

Problem solved. Taken over by another member. All is good.

Thanks

Hello,

Since life has changed, I realize that part of the impact will be my threads here. All of the photos in these threads are kept on different photo server sites, like image shack, photo bucket, etc. I think there are three of them and I pay for each. I will not be renewing any of them any more. This will mean either someone else will want to take them over and keep them going, or they will disappear and then the threads also need to disappear, since the threads are all photo heavy. I think the videos will be ok, since I do not plan on stopping my YouTube account.

If anyone wants to take these sites over, it would mean an annual fee or downloading all the photos to somewhere else and trying to re-do all of the threads. I think that is an impossible task, so keeping them where they are is about all I can see.

If anyone has ideas, feel free to discuss, but keep it gentle and calm please.

Thank you for your patience,

Justin

I have an idea but dont know if it will be given the ok. I’ll report back when I find out.

Oh crap… Justin that is a bad thought! Some of your threads are a treasure trove of information! It would be nice to see them live on, it would be better to see you live on… but. :frowning:

It would be less impossible if instead of one person taking them all on many each take just a few(at least for the original builds and mods). The problem is maintaining the original threads. Would it be possible for SB to transfer edit access to different members? This is an ongoing issue as the forum ages and members leave.

Maybe I’m simple-minded but it seems to me a simple solution would be to create a free site on a host like google mirroring the paid sites and editing the threads to point there (easiest if done by admin after the new image host is set up).

I’ve been using one host for over 10 years and am still below 25% of the cutoff for free hosting but knowing cancer statistics in the US and my family history I well understand your thought process OL.

The problem is matching up the right pics to the original threads and in order etc…

How many pics are we talking here OL? 50, 100, couple hundred?

Let us know the idea and if you need any help!

Hey Justin do you know how much they are costing you to keep them running?

What are your costs of image hosting ?

What if the OP of every OL thread is reposted twice by two members?
Each of the two download the pics and shares them on the platform he she chooses and posts it
Then when the images in the OP go bad Sully takes the first of the two backup OPs and copy pastes it into the OP.

Mate you just made me have a brain explosion hahahaha I just got mind f*cked i will reread what you wrote hahaha! We are talking about photos here not inception!

Call me slow but I don’t get it. Who’s Sully? Is that SB?

I think the best would be creating a index thread of all OL builds, and then have one or two members to download all the pictures of each thread and store them separately for easier access. I’m not an expert on this but I believe there is a script that can be run to automatically download the images from the same user?

Open up free accounts on a site like imgur, each email account can have 225 pics i believe, so to keep it simple, maybe a separate account for each large thread or two.

Then just copy the pictures to those accounts and edit the original posts.

I probably wouldn’t mind managing some of this if requested.

Or we can all chip in and keep the photo sharing service running. We would need access to his BLF account to re-post the pics to his threads? Unless we copy and paste to a new account.

Yes

People check the OL threads
if they want to do 1 (or more) they post “I am backing this one up using SITE X for the pics”
(in my case it would be Tinypic)
Then others see SITE X is used and we still need another site but if one wanted to use SITE X as well he/she does another topic first no use in backing things up twice on the same hosting site.)

Then you download ALL the pics in the OP and upload them to the site you use.
You quote the OP and edit in the pics from your chosen site
DONE

When the time comes, SB copy pastes the first backup in the OP and even if that fails in time a second backup is already made.

By informing people you will do a thread they know to take another and wth the combined power of BLF this should be doable to do right?

Wouldn’t a query in the database to retrieve every adress between the image bbcode of OL’s posts be possible ?

One could then batch download the images and upload them on the very BLF server, and batch replace the previous url’s, i imagine we’re talking less than 100 GB of picture, that would pretty much be a definitive and secure solution.

Ol’s contributions are so integral to BLF’s greatness, hosting them on the BLF server would seem appropriate, and certainly a very little hit on the server’s ressources.

Yes to most here.

Seems that we need again to talk about what we do when a member or former member has so many threads with pics that become suddenly unavailable. We need a solution. But, I have no ideas that haven’t already been mentioned. Sorry I’m no help. :weary:

I use https://postimg.org and have never paid for anything so far and I have seen no mention of having to pay with the free account.

I don’t know the maximum that can be uploaded , but I have hundreds of pictures there so far. It could be at least partly a solution for “free” hosting.

It even has an uploading “mod” as they call it , that will let you post pictures in the forum easily without having to do it the way we are accustomed to , or new members that do not know how to post pics with only a few simple clicks.

How about using dropbox? This is what I do. It’s free and I control my images.
