Scout's Entry: 4th Annual BLF/Old-Lumens Scratch Made Light Contest: Handmade

I am probably the newest member to be in the contest. I have modding experience, but never made a light completely from scratch, and I have never made a build thread before. I will be learning as I go along. Here goes…

Step one: how do you post photos? I used Google Drive and followed the howto thread, but the photo I posted above does not seem to show up. Can anyone see it? Does anyone else use Google Drive or Google photos? I already have a Google account, but I guess I can get some other hosting site if I need to. Okay, I think I got it now.

7/24/16 Build plans:

My plan is to make an angle-head light. Some of the parts I want to use are shown above, namely some copper pipe and fittings, and some aluminum stock I have. The toilet flusher is for the brass rod. I have a lot of ideas for the details, I hope I am not over ambitious, time wise. Hopefully I can start making progress tomorrow.

Sorry, no pic. I think DavidEF is having the same issue with Google. Maybe you to can help each other. I use photobucket as my image hosting site. The sunset icon in the toolbar just above the text window brings up the insert image window. Copy your image link into that and set width to 100% then click ok.

Oh, and welcome to the forum. Good timing, this is the best time of year and people will be happy to offer help and advice(sometimes too much :person_facepalming: ) if you get stuck.

What a great way to join the forum! Best wishes on your build.

I use Google, but I don't think I'm using Google Drive (not sure what that is). I do this:

  • Pull up my image in Google. Right click and select Copy Image Location
  • In BLF's Advance Post Editor, I paste the address in the source cell, input the width (1st cell) as a percent of the screen I want it to take, and delete the content of the height cell (2nd box). Here is one set to 25% wide:

Nice scout. Good to see you joining in the fun and frustration.

I use Google for image hosting. I have to enable sharing on the photo before I can share it here. Even then it sometimes doesn’t show and I redo the copy and paste and it works.

BTW welcome to the forum and to the best comp related to modded lights.

Thanks all, will keep trying tomorrow.

I think using pasted in images is a problem… It slows the site down, since each image is a real file that is either stored in the thread or elsewhere. I use Flikr and post a like to the jpg file in my account using the picture link button. SB can clear it up for us. Issues may have been fixed with the last upgrade?

Welcome aboard!

Good luck with the build, Scout!

I think I have it now, I can see it on multiple devices. The trick is not to use the link google gives you, but to right click and “copy image location”, (As ImA4wheelr suggested) which gives a different address, one that works. Thanks for the help. Now on to the build!

It worked!

Still not seeing the pic :frowning:

If you right click on where the image should be and choose the option to open in a new tab this comes up.

All right, third times the charm, hopefully? I changed the sharing settings, please let me know if you can see the picture. If this doesn’t work, I will try a different hosting site. Thanks for the patience.

We have a picture of stuff and what interesting stuff it is.
You now have my full attention and interest.

Yeah, I see the picture. What exact process did you end up having to go through to get it to show? I just tried mine again, but I won’t know if it worked or not until somebody tells me. :weary:

So, you’re going to make a flashlight that comes on when you flush the toilet? :confounded:

I think this is what worked for me:

  • Select your photo from your google photos main screen.
  • At the top left corner, there is a button marked share, click it and select “add to shared album.”
  • Once you’ve done that, go back to your main google photos page.
  • Go to the menu (top left corner,) and select “shared.” There, you can see all your shared photos.
  • From there, select your photo and navigate to “more options.” (upper left) Make sure sharing settings are set to “anyone with the link can view.”
  • However, do not use the Google provided link. To get the actual link, click on the image from the shared album to view it. Then, right click on your image and select “copy image location (URL)”.
  • Then paste into the forum the usual way.

I had to try this process twice. It worked for me the first time, but others could not see it. It did work correctly the second time. It is definitely not intuitive.

As to the contents of my picture, you see toilet flusher, I see a convenient source of brass rod.

Scout

What (apparently) worked for me was this:

  • From the Google Photos page, share (each image) to Google+
  • Go to Google+ and right click on the image and choose copy link location
  • Go back to BLF thread post and paste the url into the Insert Image dialog as usual
