Thorfire S70 Review

Thorfire Sent me an S70 for review. So i wanted to share my youtube review, and shamelessly plug my channel.

I decided against doing alot of the runtime charts for this light for a couple reasons. First I really don’t have a light to compare this to fairly. This is my first XHP70 LED light and it just isn’t fair to compare this to an xm-l2 or xp-l, and second is that this light has been around a while and many other people have done a better job of charting the runtime of this light.

The S70 came in a cardboard case protected by foam. It came with spare o-rings, switch covers and a replacement glass lens. It also had a carry strap and split rings to attach it to.

I’m very happy with the build quality of this light. No flaws in the fit and finish. The threads were nice and smooth and came lubricated. Threads were annodized at the tailcap so that it can lockout. Not seeing any flaws in the OP reflector or the glass lens.

This things lights up the backyard better than any picture can represent. It’s a pretty nice pleasant cool white beam. it’s got a good combination of throw and spill. This light is a tough light for me to review because I really don’t have another XHP70 to compare this bad boy to.

So overall I think this light isn’t going to be for everyone. It lacks alot of the bells and whistles the competition has, and lacks a moonlight mode, or even just a very low mode. However there is so much good going on here. this light carries very well with the shoulder strap. in a purse carry with the strap only over one shoulder and under the other this light is very stable and can be pointed directly in front of you. You can switch it to a rifle style carry just over one shoulder and point this directly at your feet. The strap is adjustable, and I’m a big guy and there was a ton of room for adjustment.
After testing this light out, I think of how much I would have loved to have this light when I was searching for a deer in the dark after a long day of bow hunting. The ability to carry the light on a strap is a huge plus to me. A light of this size is primarily going to be used for hunting and fishing for me, and a hands free option is just great. It’s also great that the strap is actually big enough to use. It seems anytime you get a strap nowadays I end up replacing it with something better, this is not the case with this.

I often think the benchmark of my reviews is a simple question. Knowing what I know now, would I buy the light. In this case I would definitely buy this light. At the price this light is a fantastic deal. There are no other xhp70 lights in this price range at all. It’s simple enough that I can hand it to my wife or a relative without having a 1/2 hour informational session first. As much as I would like to see this light have a nice moonlight, I recognize that this light is going to mainly get used for hunting and fishing and camping, and that I’m really not going to be holding a light this big to do some reading in my tent…

This is a light I wish I had 10 years ago. I can’t even count how many times I’ve been turned around in the woods because of a sub-standard flashlight. The idea of having 3000 lumens and being hands free this hunting season is pretty exciting to me. I like headlamps for hunting, but they can be very difficult to point. In the end the light goes where you head goes. The S70 just lights up everything in front of you, and you can do it all hands free. I also spent a good portion of my younger 20s doing search and rescue work. How much I would have liked this light back then. I’m sure there are better search and rescue lights out there, and better hunting lights out there, but at this price point it is pretty affordable for about everyone and can really give you some extra capabilities.

Great job on the review! aaand subscribed!

I have had this light since it very first came out & absolutely love it :+1:
Just one thing to the OP though, this statement ” There are no other xhp70 lights in this price range at all” is not correct.
The Convoy L6 is an XHP 70 light the same price as the S70, if not a little cheaper, & is very very similar which is the only reason I haven”t bought one as I already have the S70 & cant see me needing/using 2 extremely similar XHP70 lights.
If however the L6 had come out first, or if I didn”t already have the S70 I would definitely buy an L6.
In fact I have been having to talk myself out of buying an L6 for weeks now & still might succumb :person_facepalming:
But yes the S70 is an excellent light & according to mine & others testing gives closer to 4,000 lumens rather than the advertised 3,000

Nice review!

Good to see Thorfire brought back the switch cover that makes it easy to see cell status

The l6 slipped my mind. I’m very tempted to buy one.

My ceiling bounce on the s70 came up as 3800 lumens. But I have no other lights I can benchmark that to in order to verify accuracy. I’m calibrated for <1000 lumens.

I do have the lumintop sd75 and that comes out at 4500 lumens, so I think my numbers are within 10%

My light tube gives about 3,800 lumens & others have reported similar figures for the S70 so I think that your ceiling bounce is fairly accurate :+1:
Yes the L6 is also a very good light & I suspect that I will end up getting one but might wait until the version with the illuminated mode switch (same as the S70) that is expected comes out.
