Great news!

The new driver sounds nice… However i’m concerned about PWM especially in moon mode?

Regarding drive current, would Simon consider having a 10xAMC7135 option too? – and maybe drop one of the lower current one from the lineup.

Very nice job on this one, I will certainly buy one. Only drawback: I know that it probably is what makes a C8 a C8, but I always found the design ugly, hoped that that aspect would have had a makeover.

I’m even more excited about the (separate) driver, looking forward to the specs! Smile

Lovin the new color. Upgraded driver now is nice also. I hope theirs an option to buy with 8-10× 7135.
One thing I wish they changed was the tail cap. It should have cut out slits on them like the thorfire c8s. It makes turning on/off light much easier, and is still able to tail stand.
The way it is now, it’s too recessed.

So my question is, will this driver be available with 4 more chips over the existing ones? Or at least will soldering 4-8 chips on top of the existing be a problem for this driver?

Soldering extra chips on this driver does not create any problems. Just ask my good friend and unofficially official tester…Dale. Big Smile
It may mess with the calibration for battery check but that’s about it.

Edit: Also, moonlight mode will get brighter right along with all the other modes.

I will have to get one of those! Really pretty and the driver sounds great! I hope the driver can be purchased by itself.
The drivers will indeed be available for sale but not for a little while yet. As you’ll note in one of the pics the new driver board is red. We did this so there would be no mistakes in whether you have the new version with the new firmware or the older driver. I really like the red color. I’ll announce it when it’s available as a separate item. It may be a month or so.

Amazing work!

Are there other differences in the driver, besides new firmware?

Yeah. It’s red! Big SmileThumbs Up

I thought about asking Simon to add the recessed thumb groove but then I played with a few of my C8s and thought really I don’t care as I’ve never personally had a problem using the C8 switch even with gloves on. So, in my opinion it’s not too recessed but if the majority disagrees and wants the thumb grooved tail that can easily be added.

I hear you djozz. Not everyone agrees though as the C8 is still a big seller and like you said, if we change the design too much then it’s not a C8.

More designs will come my friend. Convoy has a pretty solid track record when it comes to patience being rewarded particularly where the desires of BLF are concerned. Wink

The Thorfire tailcap is much better. Since the Thorfire tube legoes with the Convoy head I am using one with one of my Convoys. The tailcaps alone don’t lego though. Edit: Aktually they seem to lego, I remembered wrong.

Btw., the C8 enlarged for 26650 would be a nice light for a lot of mods (e. g. with two 26350). Will the L1 take 26650?

I added the Thorfire tail cap to one of Richard’s dedomed C8s, and have to admit it’s very comfortable

Can you please post description of the new UI?
How do you switch between mode groups?
I trust there will be no blinking in low mode Smile

By the way, what’s the throw distance of stock Convoy C8 XP-L HI 8×7135?

Djozz “over smaak valt niet te twisten”
I really love the C8 design
The head makes it not roll away, the fins where heat is produced
Lines coming back in the tail.

Maybe Simon, J-Dub74 and TK have made it too good now
I am going to order at least one and do not see reason to mod it

Yes, I’ll get it up there shortly in post #2. No there is no more annoying blink. That was my number one grievance with the old 3/5 firmware.

And what is the voltage for LPV to kick in (now it is a bit too high for my liking in Convoys so if that is reduced to (<)3V this looks like an awesome driver I will order more from (preferring longer runtimes over a shorter extra brightness))

I remember when I was the only guy on my block with a silver C8.

Had this UF C8 for a long time as a house light.

I have a black Convoy C8 XP-L HI on the way, old driver I’m sure. I just hope its Flat Black like the M2 I received in the Benefit Auction.

I think the C8 would look really sweet in a Flat Olive Drab Green. I think the classic design should have the Military Surplus look.

Yes. That was the exact same thing I thought. But I didn’t want to offtopick the thread. A 26650 is the obvious c8 choice.

Perhaps the X3 will drop in price and be available with mods.

I saw poject driver in which every 7135 was switch on end off individual. So in this case there is no PWM and efficiency is higher in low modes because work as many 7135 as neccecary for each level.
Is there any problem using this driver in new Convoy C8.

One could always spray the light with some gun “paint” to get the color desired, maybe some Brownells Aluma-Hyde

This baked on finish

or another baked on finish

or even something like this.

I’ve used the first 2 and they are definitely tough. The baked on being the tougher of the 2. I haven’t used the 2nd two finishes.

I have assembled 19 Convoy C8 version 3s so far. Love the design and performance. Multiple colors would be great, green in particular. In terms of improving the design, a brass driver retaining ring would be greatly appreciated.

I for one think this driver is perfect for wide distribution to wizards and muggles alike Wink

I put a FET in 90% of my lights, but it’s not for the uninitiated. If the C8 had a FET driver, I wouldn’t be able to recommend it to noobs anymore.

Likewise the more complicated 7135 drivers (like MikeC does) would take a lot more development time and costs for Simon, with not much noticeable improvement.

Great job Simon and J-Dub

Now what? Here is the new nice great drivered clear C8 but I have a noctigon XPL HI, BLF A17DD, Black C8…. I need to sell the black one to buy this clear version, or I will wait for the L1 which will fill the gap between my C8 and L2.. Always decisions to keep or sell . But I want them all Big SmileUghh
But if the M1 get this clear look and new driver too I will buy one. And why the M1 more expensive than C8 everywhere? Is it more difficult to machine on the fins of the head?

+1 for Pilotdog’s opinion on driver. I like fet but I can replace it easily.

Per TK: LVP kicks in at 3.0V at which point the driver will start stepping down power levels finally ending in a “soft off”.
